Help very much needed. Robert Millar Glenavy, Antrim
« on: Friday 27 May 11 14:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am completely stumped as to what to do.
My 3x great grandparents Robert Millar and Mabella Higgins were married in Glenavy RC church in 1855.
I have found Mabella on 1851 census abstracts which has given me a rough year of birth, but can find no other information.
I do not have any idea when Robert was born or died or where he came from. My grandad has told me that he is a 2nd cousin of William Millar (aka Stephen Boyd, the actor from Ben Hur) but trying to trace his family back to help with my line has also hit a wall.

I am not even sure if I have found all of their children.
Their son George married Mary Kane in Glenavy RC church in Jan 1889 and moved to Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland later that year. Their 1st child William was born there in Dec 1889.

I am unable to visit Ulster at the moment and don't know when I will be able to. This is driving me potty as Scottish records are costly but freely available.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon

Hi,
Can't help much as cival Registration of RC marriages and all births started in Ireland in 1864. However I can find another child of this couple in the Family Search site. Patrick Millar was born on 12 Jan 1865 in Crumlin Co. Antrim. To get further information you will have to depend on church records.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Many thanks to kingskerswell and familyroutes for the record details.

It seems like a trip to Ulster is definitely required. I don't anticipate all the church records being available online anytime soon.

Better save some pennies first tho

According to the PRONI website, the RC parish records for Glenavy for the years 1849 - 1881 have been copied. PRONI have a copy but if you can't go there, you may also be able to order a copy in to your nearest LDS library. Check with the LDS.
