Coleraine Port Stewart families
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 12:16 BST (UK) »
HI all
Am trying to track down some families left behind when my ancestors emigrated to Australia. Dont have a lot but here is what we do have: -

William John Brown born c 1831 in or around Balderashane(?). On 14 May 1852 he married Isabella Fagan at the Coleraine registery office. His father is listed as David Brown, a farmer. In 1853 they had a daughter Martha. In 1855 they emigrated and on the shipping record it states his father is James and his mother Margaret. That his father is dead but his mother is living in Balderashane(?). . (So some confusion there).

Isabella Fagan was born c1832 in or around Ballyangherton. On her marriage cert it stated her father is John Fagan, a labourer. On the shipping record her father is listed as John and her mother as Martha both still living in Ballyangherton. Her brother William John Fagan is listed as already living in Australia. Her sister Mary Jane arrived in Australia on the same ship and her father is listed as William John and her mother as Elizabeth although her mother is stated to be deceased. Her father is said to be living in Port Stewart. (So again some confusion).
On mary Jane's death cert her brother William provides the info that her mother's name was Nancy Wilson. (More confusion) and we believe that was the name of his mother. Her father is listed as John Fagan a quarryman.

I have found a John Feagan who died 1870 in Agherton aged  82 and was a aquarryman but of course am not 100% sure this is my guy.

Thats all I have confirmed.
THanks

Sorry I don't know anything about these families, but I can help out with the placenames.

Ballyrashane is a rural parish immediately to the west of Coleraine town bordering on County Antrim.

Ballyagherton is the old name for the parish between Coleraine and the sea along the east bank of the River Bann.  It is now known as Agherton and contains the seaside town of Portstewart.

This map shows the locations of these parishes within Co Londonderry (18=Coleraine, 7 = (Bally)agherton, 10=Ballyrashane).  Hope this helps.
