Hi All,

Seeking any Information on Charles Sutton who Married Sarah Hogben 1849,
 Kent.
Also wish to confirm if Sarah  had a son born 1845, before the marriage. This family may have immigrated to Australia.

Regards,
John

Hi John and welcome to Rootschat

I see that the marriage took place in the Eastry Registration District in 1849. The certificate would give you the names of the fathers of Charles and Sarah.

In the 1851 census in Wingham there is this family.  Wingham falls in the Eastry Registration District.

Charles Sutton 29 Ag Lab b Wickham
Sarah Sutton 25 Wife b Wingham
Charles Sutton 6  Son  Scholar b Wingham

There is a birth registration on Free BMD for a Charles Hogben.

Births Mar 1845   Charles   Hogben   Eastry  5 167

The certificate would tell you his parentage but it looks as though he was an illegitimate son of Sarah.

This is probably Sarah with her family in Wingham in 1841

Banks Hogben 50 Ag Lab
Martha Hogben 40
William Hogben 20
Sarah Hogben 15
John Hogben 12
George Hogben 7

All born in county.

Have you checked family search for a baptism for Charles?

hi. all i know about these surnames is that my mother who died quite some time ago was born in greenwich. she was a little confused at times but did mention that her mother or grandmother was a sutton from kent. originally jewish,of the name cohen. but this lady, mam was not too sure which it was was given the jewish equivalent of the catholic excommunication for marrying out of the jewish faith. my mothers mother had married an hogben who i believe was born in the peabody buildings. my mother was an only child and her father was i believe a wheeltapper working for the railway.all my mothers immediate family including grandparents were all killed in the blitz my mother being the only survivor.when she was released from hospital she moved away to colne in lancashire where she met my father. she was bombed out at either luton place or the old woolwich road.i would appreciate any input. best regards michael.

Hi all

Yes Charles Sutton and Sarah Hogben did have a son Charles in 1845 before they came to Australia. My husband is the living proof of this DNA proven.  This is a long story so we didn't know anything about this family because Charles Sutton Jnr Changed his Identity to Scrutton. Charles Sutton Junior in 1884 Married an Elizabeth /Eliza Ann Castleton at West Maitland.  They had 4 Children Flora /Florence, John, Charles and Ethel 1889 Gosford my husband Bryan's Grandmother.  The marriage certificate states he was from Sussex but he's still Charles Sutton with different parents lol.  His death had Ipswich as his place of birth meaning Suffolk he's down as John Joseph Scrutton, and also Joseph Scrutton etc trying to hide who he was for some reason?  How I found out is Bryan had a DNA match to a Chandler relative And I had no idea who she was.  So further digging found out Elizabeth Chandler married a Richard Sutton who happened to be Bryans 2 times great grandparents lol.  If you are on ancestry Bryan is on there and also my heritage and Gedmatch Also

Dear All

Hoping someone will see this as I have loads of old photographs of which I believe is of the Sutton family back in the early 1900s/20s.

Charles Edwin Sutton and Rosa had 4 girls - Lilian, Martha, Annie and Beatrice. I have information to Lilian - but loads of old family photographs.

Would someone please assist me - I would love to give these back to the correct family.

Sadly - Lilian who passed way in 1985, one of her sons Cecil Edwards - who lived in Plumstead but passed away in 2011... when the house was being cleared noone wanted any of these photos etc

Fingers Crossed!
