LUKS Brothers, Victoria, Australia
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 23:11 BST (UK) »
Hi there  :)

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the LUKS brothers: Herman, Renke Frederick, Bernard and John Bernard Ludwig. They were all born in Oldenburg, Germany (formerly Prussia) and they arrived in Victoria, Australia (at different times) between approximately 1853 and 1860. They all left sometime after the great Inglewood fire of 1862 when everything they had was destroyed, and moved to Dunedin, New Zealand. While in Victoria, Renke Frederick LUKS married Elizabeth MCKENZIE, from Liverpool, who apparently ran some type of business on the goldfields before marrying. They had one child, Herman Andrew LUKS, before leaving for New Zealand around 1864. The LUKS brothers ran hotels in New Zealand, and they may have done the same in Victoria before leaving.

Any information that anyone may have on these names, or suggestions on where to look for more info, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Katrina Fraser

Renke's daughter May married my great  grandfather Jerry Lundon in Auckland in 1903. Jerry (John Raphael) Lundon was a prominent barrister and defended the Tuhoe profit Rua Kenana in what was then the longest high court trial during World War I. Shortly after the trial, Jerry Lundon was dis-barred and never worked again. May, who had been living in Victoria Road, Remuera with stables, suddendly found herself and the family living above a shop and taking in sewing to survive. Eventually, after a failed attempt at farming, the family settled at 46 Tainui Road, Devonport. The property was sold when the last of my great aunts died and is now an award winning homestay called The Towers/Devonport Villa Inn, named after the tower bedroom which my great aunt Betty occupied when I was a child.

I hope this helps,
Terry.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for sharing your information. What an amazing story, my husband will be intrigued when I show him this message. Do you have any further information about the Luks family? From what we have found out so far they appear to have been very interesting people. We have begun compiling information about the family to include in a book.
