LARNER INFORMATION

Information on the Larner/Lardner line began with information supplied by my mother Catherine Blood nee Byrne that her mother had entered the country as a young girl (14-16 yrs) with a cousin by the name of Martin Larner. The year of entry was also unknown.
Martin Larner was located in the 1900 census for Philadelphia living at 2709 Edgemont St with another family with the name of Conroy. Martin was listed as a Boarder as was another male by the name of Timothy Newall. Reference Vol. 175 ED 594, Sheet 4, Line 72 in the 1900 Census (T-623 Roll# 1467)
Martin in the 1900 Census is listed as being born in September 1872 age 27 in Ireland. His immigration is listed as 1896. At this time he is not married.
Martin is living in the household of a John Conroy. John is listed as being born March 1872 age 28 married 5 years with 3 children and 3 children living. His wife is listed as Ellen born April 1873 age 27. Marie a daughter born July 1896 age 3, Nora born July 1898 age 1 and a John born December 1899 age 3 months. John Conroy listed his immigration as 1893.
A search of Marriage records revealed an application was made on the 4th of September in 1895 in Philadelphia. John Conroy was listed as being born in Ireland unknown day (age 25 years) in 1870 and that he resides at 2655 East Thompson Street and that he is a coal trimmer by trade and is not related by blood to Ellen LARDNER whom he is about to marry and that she was born in Ireland on unknown day (age 23 years) in 1872 and that she resides at 1727 North 8th Street in Philadelphia and is listed as a domestic.
Another search of marriage records reveals that on 25th day of November 1902 Martin Larner applied for a license to marry a Mary McNulty. Martin stated he was born in Galway, Ireland on the 13th Day of November 1874 and that he resides at 2673 Aramingo Street in Philadelphia and that he is a laborer. Mary McNulty whom he is about to marry was born in Philadelphia on the 14th day of August 1874 and that she resides at 2632 Tucker Street in Philadelphia.
Another search of the 1900 Census reveals a Mary LARDNER listed at 1727 North 8th Street. She is listed as being born in Ireland October 1876 24 years of age and her entry into the country was 1890. Reference: ED 436, Roll 1462 Sheet #11 Line 74. She is listed as a cook working for the family at 1727 North 8th Street. The family being a M. J. Mullon(?)

In April of 2005, Martin Lardner was located in a database of Philadelphia Passenger lists of 1883 to 1945. It listed Martin Lardner age 22 W/M with arrival date in Philadelphia as 19 June 1899. He was aboard the ship “Pennland” that sailed from Queenstown on the 8th of June 1899. On the manifest he listed a sister “Mary” as living on North 8th Street in Philadelphia as his destination. He was listed as a laborer.

In the database of Philadelphia Passenger Lists of 1883 to 1945 a Catherine and Timothy Lardner are listed as both coming into Philadelphia on the ship Noordland. This ship left Queenstown, Ireland on the 12th of October 1905 and arrived in Philadelphia on the 23rd of October 1905. Their residence in Ireland was list as Annaghdown, which is in Galway. Catherine’s estimated date of birth was listed as about 1875 and Timothy was listed as about 1867. Their actual ages listed were not readable. Both Catherine and Timothy listed a Martin Lardner at 2362 Tucker Street and a Delia Lardner at 2656 Edgemont Street as being their destination. And that the relationship of Martin and Delia was that of son and daughter to Timothy.

In the database of Philadelphia Passenger Lists of 1883 to 1945 an Ellen Lardor (?) was located as being on the ship British Prince and arriving in Philadelphia on April of 1892. Ellen was listed as age 19.

In the database of Philadelphia Passenger Lists of 1883 to 1945 Norah Lardner was located as being on the ship Westernland leaving Queenstown, Ireland on the 25th of September 1902 and arriving at Philadelphia on the 5th of October 1902. She is listed under ticket # 20989 as being age 17, estimated birth year being 1885 and her final destination was to be 533 Tioga Street home of sister Mary Lardner. The address of 533 West Tioga Street is the address for Saint Veronica’s Church where Norah, Mary and others worked in the rectory as housekeepers.

In the database of Philadelphia Passenger Lists of 1883 to 1945 Delin (Delia) Lardner was located as being on the ship Pennland leaving Liverpool and arrived at Philadelphia on 27th of August 1899. Delia is listed as being born about 1878. her final destination appears to be 2804 Alter Street in Philadelphia and working for a Mrs. Dunn. She listed Tuenn as her last residence in Ireland.

Recently I have been researching my mother’s family name –Lardner.  We have records of the family having lived in Galway town from at least the 1750’s.  While trying to track the birth date of my great-grandfather Timothy Lardner, I came across the baptism record of another Timothy Lar(d)ner, baptised on 10th October 1839 in the parish of Annaghdown which is some miles north of the town of Galway on Lough Corrib.  His father was listed as Thomas Larner and his mother as Eleanor Monahan.  There were 2 sponsors, Andrew Quin and Mary Griffin.   I know that he is not my great-grandfather because his father’s name was listed on the civil record of his marriage in Galway in 1869 as Patrick Lardner.  Reading your account the Lardners  in Annaghdown it struck me that there might be some connection with your own and the information might prove useful.

With best wishes,

Anne-Marie

Hello Ann-Marie:
The information that you posted on Thomas Larner and Eleanor Monahan was correct in that it is related to my family and the post. The news of the sponsors was new and thank you for that information. Thomas Lardner/Larner was born about 1787 in Annaghdown, married a Eleanor Monaghan about 1835 and had the following children: Timothy born 10 Oct 1839 in Tonagurrane and would marry a Honor REDDINGTON in Tonagurrane. A Patrick Larner born 26 Feb 1836 and he would marry a Ellen NEWEL on 8 Feb 1859. And a Denis Lardner born 20 Aug 1841 and married to a Bridget FAHERTY. All in Tonagurrane. Again thanks for the information. Gene Blood in Norton Mass. Ties to Philadelphia, Pa.
