Picking up this line of investigation again.
I have reminded myself of an previously mentioned entry in  the Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds for:

Schumacher Henry and Margaret Johnson Cork and Ross 1844

Given the unusual name, Schumacher, and the same year and location I have flagged this up as a possibility.

I know they were married in St FinnBarrs Cathedral 1844 by the Dean but the cathedral has no record.

I have this woman as Catherine, or Kate, Johnson. She died in Glasgow in 1909 aged 78.

On the death certificate her parents are named as Noble Johnson and Mary Edwards.

I have never seen Catherine Johnson referred to as Margaret. Scratching my head here. Is this the same person? Where can I go next?

I am not having any luck looking for her birth.

It cannot be her......
1909 take away 78   =   1831      she would have been 13 when married in 1844. There again may have been young!
The Scotland records are very detailed, maybe worth getting a copy.

Was Noble Johnson a Clerk of the Peace?
number 84

Thank you for your reply. The date of birth was a problem. I have her age from her death certificate. I could try and follow Henry Schumacher and Margaret Johnson forward to rule them out.

I know my Henry Schumacher and Catherine Johnson left Ireland relatively soon after their marriage in 1844. They had a child in England in approx 1852. I believe they had three children in Ireland, Henry, Mary and Noble. I have no birth details for any of these children. Their first daughter was called Mary, presumably after her maternal grandmother, Mary Edwards, and another daughter Catherine, presumably after her mother.

The Noble Johnson that appears frequently in the records is, to my best knowledge, gentry. ‘My’ Noble Johnson was a brewer.

I have the death certificate for Catherine Schumacher, in 1909. That is how I know the name of her parents, Noble Johnson and Mary Edwards. Her age is given as 78.
I have her on the 1891 census age unclear
I have her on the 1871 census as 44
I have her on the 1861 census as 32

These point to her age at marriage in Cork on 1Dec 1844 as ranging from 13 -17. I believe both her parents were dead by 1844

Only because it’s related to the brewery trade, there was a Noble Johnson a Cooper in Cork.

His son also Noble married in 1853 to Mary Reynolds and this Noble’s address is one mentioned before Friar’s Walk.

Thanks for this. I believe this to be a distinct possibility. Are you able to provide any more details for this Noble Johnson, a cooper in Cork: source, dates, marriage to Mary Edwards, death?

Also interested in following up the son Noble Johnson who married Mary Reynolds.

I believe Catherine’s father Noble, was deceased by the time of the marriage of his daughter in 1844.

I have the date of the marriage, 1st Dec 1844, St Finn Barrs. This date appears on some of their children’s birth certificates. The date is confirmed by an announcement in the Cork Examiner, 2 Dec 1844, under the name Sochomorker. The cathedral does not hold records for this marriage.

I have an entry in 1845 for a Henry Shenmacher in the valuation of tenements in Friars Walk. I have marked this as a distinct possibility.

I have no birth details for the children I believe to have been born in Ireland : Henry ~ 1846, Mary and Noble. I have details for them once they moved to England and Scotland.

With the spelling Sochomorker I found the marriage announcement in the Nenagh Guardian and it says  “late Noble Johnson of Dublin” it also gives the marriage date as 1 December.

The Johnson Reynolds marriage I found simply by putting Noble Johnson into Irish Genealogy and looked at Cork results.
