Edward Rothwell born 1847 Liverpool
« on: Monday 23 May 11 20:49 BST (UK) »
Any suggestions to the following mystery would be gratefully appreciated.

On the 1881 census my maternal great great grandfather Edward Rothwell b. 1847 (married) was living with his children, Margaret b. 1868, Edward b. 1874, and Louisa Jane b. 1876

Also listed is Jane Clark his mother-in-law, Thomas Hall - nephew and Frederick Jones - visitor.

There is no mention of his wife, could this be that she was in hospital as she was still of child bearing age?

Apologies if this seems trivial, however, I am some what of a rookie when it comes to reading the census.

Kind regards

JB

I'm suspecting that he married Louisa Jane Foully at St Nicholas on 23rd June, 1867.  In case you don't have the details, he was of full age and she was a minor, both lived in Sun Street, Bachelor and spinster.  He was a butcher, father Anthony Rothwell, Cowkeeper.  Her father was Alexander Foully, Mariner.
Edward signed and Louisa Jane made her mark X.  Witnesses were John Kinley and Mary Ellen Whitby.

There is a death for a Louisa Jane Rothwell Q1 1889 West Derby 8b 269 age 40.

There is a burial for a Louisa Rothwell at Ford Cemetery on 6th March, 1889 address 147 Field (probably Field Street) age 40, Grave No. 2630.  Were your Rothwells Catholic?

Do we know who his wife was ???....and if possible what year she was born ?
Mary ...I thought his mother in law was Clark  on 1881 census ?....wouldn`t that make his wife a Clark ??..
then again ,I suppose his MIL could have married again..

Hi Allan

I thought that, but the census says mother, not mother in law. According to the 1871 she was Jane, but the Louisa Jane  that Mary found looks good especially as there was a daughter Louisa. Still doesn't explain where she was in 1881.

Purchasing one of the children's birth certificates would give her maiden name and confirm if this is the right one.

I suppose his MIL could have married again..

That was my thought, although the actual image says Mother not Mother In Law.

I have a birth 25 July 1876 baptism 1st April 1887 for a Louiza Rothwell child of Edwardi and Joanna Rothwell (nee Foley).  Godmother Brigitta Sythe.  This took place at St Francis Xaviers.

Joanna = Jane ?  Did the mother use the name Jane rather than Louisa?  Is Foley close enough to Foully to be mistaken?

The Field Street address on the burial is very close to SFX church.

It's all supposition of course  and obviously up to JB to confirm the mother by means of a birth certificate, perhaps of his direct ancestor, but I thought perhaps the date of the marriage was so close and also the child Louisa Jane being named after her mother.
