BMD lookup for Occomore ( Completed, with thanks)
« on: Monday 23 May 11 16:27 BST (UK) »
Can some one please look for the death of Minnie Occomore?
I notice on the Canadian Ancestry there is a Minnie Oconner who died in York Northumberland West, Ontario ,which is near the place she was living
  in 1891
She appears to have gone to Hamilton Northumberland West, Ontario as shown on the 1891 Census of Canada and was adopted by an Irish Family called STOTT, (James and Jane )
She came from Camberwell London and was born in 1878. She was sent Dr Barnardos Home. along with her elder sister Susan Elizabeth Occomore they where both sent to a new life in Canada after the suddden death of their Father.
Minnie went in 1886 and her sister Susan (Susie) was sent over two years later. they appear to have been completely separated. Susan wasn't adopted, but went on to marry and live in America.
I am compiling a one name study of the name Occomore and It is a name that is often misspelled. I find typing Oc*more often yields good results.
I have asked for a check on the death records but if anyone can trace a marriage I would be most interested.
Many thanks
Patricia

There is a Minnie OConnors who died in Toronto in 1894 but she was born in Ireland. There is also a Minnie OConnor who died in 1891 in Oxford County who was close to the same age but she was born in Ontario.

I can't see anything for Minnie other than the 1881 England census entry and the 1891 Canada census entry.

Have you tried contacting Bernardos for more information?

Hi,

In case you don't have this - the record of Minnie's arrival to Canada
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dcx/

This might help - also from the Library and Archives Canada:

And there is a thread in Rootschat Canada Resources that has lots of links for tracing home children:

Thank you both for you help.
I wonder if she might have changed her name to that of her adoptive parents?
Can you check the 1901 census for James and Jane Stott to see if she is still with them please. The Stotts had a son Albert , he would have been 10 or 11 in 1901.
I did check with Barnardo's to see if I might search their records but the the Fee is over £100 for documents and a photo, as I am just doing a one name study and they are not related to me I think I will have to pass that one up.
Thank once again
Patricia

You can access the 1901 Census for free at this link. Click on 'split view' at the top of the transcription page to see the original image .... it gives more info than the transcript covers.

Thank you PB.
I can't seem to get access to the site! Keeps telling me 7 people are using it so try again later. Is this normal?
Is there any other site with the 1901 census for Canada  on it?

The website seems to be acting up today for some reason ... I can't get in at the moment either. Perhaps later. To my knowledge, the only other way to access the census is through Ancestry if you have access to the world or the Canadian versions. That one seems to be working at the moment.

I found a way, ::)  on the Library and Archives of Canada site, they have images of all the census's. You search by area then open a pdf file and look down the actual census enumerators form.
I have found the adoptive parents but not Minnie. It's time consuming but nice to see the original document.
Thanks for your advice and help

Hi again.

Glad you found another way and you educated me to a new way at the same time  ;D. Minnie certainly is elusive. Any chance she followed her sister to America? (I'm assuming here that you meant Susan went to the USA).
