A possible way forward might be to get a copy of the marriage record from the parish records (not the pallots record as they don't usually have all the information) as there might be extra information on there taht couyld help you identify him going back

Oh, thank you, I'll look into that  :)

The Ebenezer Atkinson birth at Hartwith on the IGI was from the Quaker records, Knaresborough Meeting, deposited in London hence the confusion on the IGI.
Quaker records tend to be in family blocks rather than by date, so this is Ebenezer and siblings. Birth records as Quakers didn't do baptisms.

1766. Ann the daughter of James Atkinson and Jane, his wife, was born the 17th day of the 9th month, 1766 at Hartwith in the Parish of Kirby Malzerd.
1767. James Atkinson, son of the aforesaid James and Jane Atkinson of Hartwith, was born the 16th day of the 8th month 1767.
1768. Ebenezer Atkinson, son of the aforesaid James and Jane Atkinson of Hartwith, was born the 11th of the 11th month 1768.
1771. John Atkinson, son of the aforesaid James and Jane Atkinson, was born the 25th day of the 3rd month 1771.
1773. Thomas Atkinson, son of the aforesaid James and Jane Atkinson, of Mauk Hill in Darley, in the Parish of Hampsthwaite, was born the 29th day of the 5th month 1773.
1778. Jane Atkinson, daughter of the aforesaid James and Jane Atkinson, of Cinder Hill in Darley, in the Parish of Hampsthwaite, was born the 12th day of the 6th month 1778.

Hi Alan,

Thank you so much for that information.  Now I can begin looking for siblings too in order to go forward (or backward..lol)

I always find the IGI records a tad confusing and I am never confident about the local districts being the appropriate ones. Thank you again.

It's very kind of everyone who helped me.

Hi,

I came across this posting from 2011 when searching the web and wondered if you were still interested in Ebenezer Atkinson? I have a distant connection to him and have gathered quite a lot of information from his 3 marriages and some descendants, especially his daughter Elizabeth born in 1793 (mother - Edith Dodgson).

Regards,

Jon

Hi Sue,

My research is based around Ebenezer’s first marriage to Edith Dodgson in October 1792. From what I can see they had 1 daughter, Elizabeth, before Edith died in June 1795. Ebenezer re-married in November 1796 to Ann Stockdale but I have no record of any children. Ann must have died before 1809 because as you know, in June of that year he married again to Hannah Adamson and I believe they had 5 children. Hannah died in December 1834.

Elizabeth at some point moved to London and in September 1821 married William Ellis and then later again in 1841 to Joseph Langley. The Ellis's had 7 children, the eldest of which Edith (born September 1822) is my G2 grandmother. I guess that makes Ebenezer my G4 grandfather, albeit by a rather convoluted route which I can explain later if it’s of interest.

Ebenezer was the son of James (1770) and Jane Atkinson, and his paternal grandparents were Thomas Atkinson (1704-1782) and Mary Hardcastle.

I have quite a lot more detail on the above (dates, names, images and source information) that I could send to you if that helps and you agree with my findings. I have not spent too much time on the Atkinson family as my main interest is in Elizabeth, so if you have any information about when she died, that would be a great help to me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Jon
