Possible Romany Relatives - Need Date to Assist Guesses!
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 19:09 BST (UK) »
Again - as with my other photo posted today - this photo - in the possession of an 81 year old lady with the same Romany background as myself - was already pasted - we assume by the lady's mother as it was passed down in her belongings - along with another photograph, to a bit of plain stiff card.  The lady doesn't know the people featured, but a possible date might help in trying to figure out who they could be.  The 81 year old lady is keen for me to find out what I can about the photo, so I have her permission to post this.

I'm not a gambler but I'd have a flutter on this being the same person in both your photos..........

The dress styles in this range from late teens - early 20's.
I would agree the same woman.

Just a comment - I think you could be absolutely right with your matching of earlier photos with older.  And what a lovely photo of a group of strong, good looking women.  Lovely expressions on all of them.

I don't go along with the assumption these are all the same women as the other photo.
These women are the same generation whereas in the other photo it looks like mother & children.
The 2 photos are roughly 10 years apart with the ages ranging from later teens to mid/late 20's in the other photo meaning they would be late 20's to mid/late 30's in this one & as you can see they are much older than that.
I would say these ladies ages range from late 40's to around 60.

Thanks for the comments so far!  I've attached a photo of my Romany - or mostly Romany G-grandmother Susan Taylor (b. 1891) and her daughter Clara Skingley (b.1915).  Clara died when my mother was 4, and in acrimonious circumstances having separated from my grandfather ... so I've had to do all my Rom research with only two clues that came down to my mum: 1. we are related to 'the famous evangelist Gipsy Rodney Smith' (I discovered he was 1st cousin to Susan's mother Naomi, their respective parents being brothers Cornelius and Bartholomew Smith (2 of the "The Three Converted Gipsy Brothers") and 2. my grandmother's mother was 'true Romany'.  The latter is only part-way true as I've found out Susan's maternal grandmother was non-Rom - hence her uncle the evangelist Gipsy Simon Smith being fair-haired - and her father's mother's father's mother was rumoured also to be non-Rom!!  So 'quite a lot Romany' might be nearer the mark :)
As I posted in my other thread yesterday, I don't know what Susan's mother, my GG-grandmother Naomi Smith (b. abt. 1860), looked like but suspect her of being one of the women in this group photo.  I think that looks-wise at least, Susan most resembles the woman in the bottom right hand corner.

After I posted my last message, I noticed the similarity between the pendants that the lady in the top left hand corner of the main photo, and my great grandmother Susan are wearing!  Another clue that the top left hand corner person is my gg grandmother Naomi? Naomi died in 1926, so it's quite logical that a piece of her jewellery might have been left to Susan.  Of course, the main clue that it is Naomi is that she's the only woman featured in both of the old photos stuck to the card ... which was in amongst Naomi's daughter Ocean's old family photos.  Ocean was bombed out of her East End home during the Blitz, which would explain why there weren't any other photos that might corroborate this being her mum.  If only the card had been written on!!!  Hoping someone else who does have confirmed photos of Naomi Taylor, nee Naomi Smith will find this post one day and get in touch  :)

Oops - correction! - getting confused with the death dates.  Naomi died in 1943, not 1926.  It was HER mother Susan Smith nee Lee who died in 1926.  Back to the drawing board ...
