Lindsays of Kirriemuir
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 15:19 BST (UK) »
I am conducting research into the Lindsay family on an international basis and a lead seems to go to the Dundee area of Scotland.

The line appears to be centred on a Robert Lindsay, born 1821 Kirriemuir and died 1904 in Arbroath.

As anybody heard of this line?

Many thanks.

Thanks for all the data.

It looks like this is the Lindsay line I have been looking for.

We are both Lindsay International Group 1 and we have a close, 1 mismatch out of 43 markers indicating a probable common ancestor within the last 12 generations.

Unfortunately, this line seems to have given up their roots programme. Is anything known about this line locally or are there more Lindsay researchers in the Dundee/Forfar area?

I too am researching a Lindsay line from Kirriemuir, the family I have so far is Peter Lindsay born 1888, married Agnes Wood in 1913: his father James Mealmaker Lindsay born 1860 married Helen Irvine in 1882: his father Peter Lindsay born 1829 married Mary Mealmaker in 1855: his father John Lindsay born about 1806 married Jean Young in 1828: his father James Lindsay born about 1785 married Majory Simpson:

Douglas Lindsay who is my late father in law, was the son of Peter & Agnes Wood and was born in Fife, Scotland in 1929, died in 1999.

Could this be the same family?

It could be as they were  in a similar geographical area.

You would need to chase the most recent spokesperson for this Lindsay line.  I think she comes from a long line of Lindsays of Kirriemuir & Dundee. Her mother was a Barrie, perhaps related to the famous novelist of that area?  She has promised me details for our website but as she lives in Florida, I suppose it will take sometime!

I cannot add to the above Scots details as my Lindsay line farmed in the Moneymore/Maghera/Bellaghy area of Co.Londonderry and were thought to be Scots who come to Ireland in the 1600's as part of the Plantation of Ulster. I can trace my line back to 1794 in Ireland.

My Lindsay DNA suggests a close relationship to East Scottish coast Lindsays of Dundee/Kirriemuir but can't get the connection until I can get more details of Scots Lindsays of this area.

Perhaps you can give me more details of your Lindsay line and if they ever had any connections with Ireland?

Thanks for your reply, I'm afraid I've no way of knowing if there was an Irish connection, as the family members who would have known are all gone. James Lindsay born late 1700's no exact date or place of birth for him, married Majory Simpson in 1857,  one of their sons John born 1806, Angus area married Jean Young also of the same age and area, their son Peter born 1829 Kirriemuir Angus, married Mary Mealmaker in 1855, as already mentioned. I'm back as far as the late 1700's and the family is still in Kirriemuir, Angus area. I have quite a lot of information relating to other family members, siblings of those directly in my tree etc, if you want to look at it you are welcome

I’m very interested in this thread although it looks rather old. I’m related to the Irvines of Kirriemuir so might be able to supply information about the Helen Irvine if I knew more information about the one listed as married to Lindsays. I have been told my line of Irvines are related to the Barries through an illegitimate birth in 1775. I would be interested in connecting our lines if anyone is still monitoring this thread
