William KANE

Hi Tish

You may be able to help me.
I am hoping to find information on William Kane b. Antrim, Ireland 1887 d. Wellington, NZ 1955. He worked his way up the ranks to become Chief of Police in Wellington. I have no idea where to find any information about his career and have little experience with New Zealand research.

Any advice or help very much appreciated.

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

There are two resources that might be useful to you. The first is a microfilm held by Archives New Zealand in their Wellington office:

Police Staff Register with Nominal Index. Book 1. 1859-1927. Microfilm 3348.

I mention this film because while outside your timeframe there may be other films for later years. This film (and presumably others if they exist) doesn't appear on Archway, Archives New Zealand's search portal because permission is required from NZ Police to view it, due to privacy reasons.

The second item is a book by R. T. Hermans, entitled Capital Coppers (1985).p.31.

Unfortunately I am not able to look for these items for you but others here might be able to. ;)

Modified to add: Anyone able to look for an Archives file should speak to an Archivist, firstly to see if a file exists and secondly, discover how to access the file.

Hi Sharon

From my research here is  precise of some of William Kane's career in the New Zealand Police:

Detective in the Wellington CIB in the late 1920's and until July 1936 when he was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant.

In 1938 he was a Detective Sergeant in the Masterton CIB.

Holding the rank of Sub-Inspector he was officer in charge of the Masterton Police District from 1947 to 1950.  At the age of 63 he would have been approaching retiring age which was most probably 65 in those times.

I cannot find him listed at the officer in charge of the Wellington District.

I shall send you a PM (personal message).

Best wishes with your research.
