Field family in Norwood Surrey
« on: Thursday 19 May 11 11:14 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any record at all from Census, birth, death or marriage for a William Field who was the husband of Anne Field and father of their three children Walter born 1842 in Hampshire, Helen born 1845 in Norwood Surrey and Frederick born 1948 in Norwood.  Walter was born in either Tichley or Bentworth Hampshire depending on which Census you believe, and the father William obviously was with the family until at least 1848, but there is no record of their father William Field by the 1851 Census onwards when Anne and her children resided in Marylebone Middlesex where they lived until the 1891 Census, after which Helen joined her brother Frederick's family in Leyton Essex which is the last record.  I'm guessing if he died or left, it would have been in Surrey.  Regards, Kathy.

Do you have (or can you get) one of the kids - Frederick* or Helen* most likely - Birth Certificates - this should provide Ann's maiden name and possibly help in the 1841 census. It doesnt look like they were together in 1841, but every little helps!

* Both seem to have been registered in the Croydon District, which I believe then lapped Lambeth?

Thanks for the information.  I will order the birth certificates for Helen or Frederick which I've located on the England & Wales Free BMD Index.  Can't seem to find the record for my ancestor Walter unless I can find it in some online parish records for Hampshire.  His marriage certificate in Australia has no details, and his death certificate states mother Ann Field and father Field with no first name.  I got the William from the christening records for Helen and Frederick in the familysearch.org site.  A strange thing I noticed in the 1861 Census is that her "mother" Priscilla Field" born in Wigmore Herefordshire is living with them.  Perhaps they mean mother in law.  However, Walter named gave his eldest daughter the middle name Howard which could be his mother's maiden name.  I'll try the death certificate mentioned above for William.  Thanks once again.  Kathy.

Thanks for the new information Jan.  Rosa Eleanor must have died before the 1851 Census because she isn't in that one or any subsequent ones.  Regards, Kathy.

Does anyone know if there is an online parish clerk for Hampshire?  I have got about as much information on Walter Field's family in the London area as I can find including his parents Anne Field and William Field's wedding at St. Mary, Bryanston Square Middlesex on 23/7/1844 and the births of their three other children in Norwood, and even a death certificate for William 4/1/1849 in Lambeth, and even Anne and her sister's births and their parents marriage.  And that is because all that London information is online. However, Walter Field in his 1851 and 1861 English Census is said to have been born in Hampshire (2 years before their wedding) in either Bentworth of Tichley (?), and in all his Australian records detailing his work as a ship steward he consistently says born 1842 or 1843 Hampshire, as does his Australian marriage and death certificates.

How do I get information about Hampshire baptisms when they're not online.  He should be in the England Birth Index but I can't find him there either.  Any suggestions?  Regards, Kathy Schneider.

Have you tried looking for him under his mother's maiden name? If he was born 2 years before their wedding he is likely to have been registered as that. In that case there is no guarantee that William Field was his natural father.  ;D
