Following my queries regarding Benjamin James, my Great Great Grandfather, and his second wife Frances, with help from several very kind people on here, I have been able to go a bit further back. However I have now hit another brick wall.
Following the help above I was able to request the birth certificate for Frances James, nee Hendy, and was able to find that her mother was Anne Hendy. As expected no father was mentioned (reputed father Joseph Protheroe thus unconfirmed).
I am now at a crossroads regarding the paternal ancestry of Benjamin James (born 1839). The James family Bible which has passed down to me confirms that Benjamin's father was James James, probably born ca 1810. The 1841 census for Stackpole Elidor shows James James and Sarah James, both aged ca 25 with a son Benjamin aged 18 months which is the correct age.
A while ago I had a short-term license with ancestry.com, and was able to import some information from other family trees which I now believe may be incorrect. The family trees (probably not independent, probably one person entered the information first and everyone else imported) all suggest James James' parents were Thomas James (b1785) and Margaret Rowland (b1789), and that Thomas James' parents were James Williams (b1759)and Margaret (b1763). I can find no other evidence to confirm this, and I find it strange that the surname changed from father to son from Williams to James.
Following a kind tip on here from Orielbenfro, I have searched the Stackpole Group of Parishes Registers Index site at
http://www.revjones.fsnet.co.uk/stackgrpreg/register.htmand I think I have built up a different picture as follows:
• James James baptised 10/4/1814 in Stackpole Elidor to parents Thomas and Ann
• James James married Sarah Griffiths on 22/4/1837 in Stackpole Elidor
• Thomas James married Anne Gibbs in St Petrox on 29/11/1799 (I am assuming there are several inconsistencies in the spelling of Ann/Anne)
• There are 9 children baptised in Stackpole Elidor to Thomas and Ann(or Anne), these names all tally with offspring of Thomas James in the family trees imported.
• Thomas James was baptised 28/11/1773 in Stackpole Elidor to parents David and Anne.
• Unable to find burial match for Thomas James, but there is an Ann James buried 9/7/1851 aged 72 in St Twynnells;
• The 1841 census for Stackpole Elidor has an Ann James aged 60, Elizabeth James aged 40,Alice James aged 36 and George James age 20 living with Benjamin and Sarah James; intriguingly they are described as 'Parochial Relief' rather than as relations, but their ages all match those of Ann and three of her children of the same name.
I feel I have probably uncovered enough to discredit the information in the family trees (when I was a member of Ancestry, none of the family tree owners I could find had logged in for several months or even years).
Is the above sufficient to overturn the family trees and identify Thomas James and Anne Gibbs as James James' parents? Has anyone else been researching any of the above people?
