  This is a wild shoot, but I am trying to track down a Mr Watson first name may have been Joseph who lived in either Beverley or Wetwang not sure which. This would be at around the turn of the centuary (1900), his wife was not well and had a carer by the name of Alice Hood. At around that time for some reason or other Mr Watson and the carer ran off to Canada.

Have you checked for Passengers outbound to Canada or they could have gone by way of New York then onto Canada??
Have you checked the 1911 census to see if any of them were still in UK??
Have you found a death for Mrs Watson??
Did Mr n Mrs Watson have any children and if so have you found any of them??

Hi and welcome to rootschat
There are various free sources you can use to help your search.   www.freebmd.org.uk has civil registration records, www.familysearch.org has parish registers and the 1881 census.   Freecen may provide later census.
We can't do look ups but the 1911 census index is free to search and there are lots of suggestions on this thread:

 If you can give a little more information as to how these people fit into your family history then it may make it easier to trace them.

Thanks for the responses, I am a bit new at this and to be honest have not done this kind of undertaking before. I have a e-mail friend in Canada who is the grandchild of the two who eloped off to Canada and he asked me if I could find out where they were from and any other information I could uncover. How do I access the passenger list for ships that left for Canada? I will also try these other sources you have directed me too, like the census.

Found these for an Alice Hood travelling to Canada...

the last one 1885 is most likely, as the others will be too young, if she was working by 1900, there is the possibility that they married?? and both were Watson, there is almost 2 pages of an Alice Watson of varying ages and travelling at varying times to Canada.

There is far too many Joseph Watson to know which may be him, we need more specific information, like his first name, approximate date of birth, his wifes first name etc., also did he and Alice Hood marry in Canada or UK??

Will have a look and see if I can find the Watson's on the 1901 census for the areas you mention.

1901 census  Woodmansey with Beverley Parks (part of)

Alice Hood  15 yrs Single born Walkington which is near Beverley occupation Housemaid.
 living with parents Francis & Sarah Hood at 14 Queensgate Road.
RG 13/4463
It dosen't appear she is a Housemaid at home, so must be working out, could be a daily housemaid or was at home at time of Census.

Joseph Watson Married Head 59 yrs Born Beverley Occupation  ? Builder    Employed as Worker

Did he do building work in Canada??

I cannot find any others in Beverley/Wetwang areas, but these above do not mean the are correct either, you need to do a bit more searching and to cross reference the DOB and POB when you find some info from your friend.

Can you ask if they took any children to Canada??

Can you ask your friend..

If they took Canadian Citizenship/Naturalisation.

Has he got the details of the children they had, were they born in Canada or UK, also where did they live in Canada and what did they do for occupations.

Did either of them ever return to UK for a visit, if they did, we might be able to find them on Uk Incoming Passenger Lists.
