Good stuff, Bendywendy. Re your point about women and their prospects. Generally, unmarried daughters were well accommodated in their father's wills and were quite comfortable. The married ones were dependent on their husbands and no longer the responsibility of their father. Having said that, though, let's not forget that there was normally a marriage settlement made on the daughter by the father, so they weren't cut off. Those women who disappear off the record have probably changed their names on marriage and we just haven't found them yet. I've found many of my female family member's surnames just by consistent detective work.

FYI, attached is a photo of Sarah Watson.

Hi Bendywendy -

So glad you found Ann Watson. I knew there was an older daughter as Hannah's death notice mentioned that she was Joseph's second daughter. Yay - another piece slotted into the jigsaw. Well done :)

Another tantalising lead. I found evidence that a Henry Watson of Swanland died c. 1723. He was survived by 5 sons: Henry, John, William, Thomas and Samuel. Could one of these sons have been the grandfather or father of our Joseph born 1785?

Hey Pankpop that info re Henry Watson of Swanland is brilliant.
I have been trying to find out about Stephen Watson of Swanland, not much luck finding a lead for a Joseph Watson from him, so maybe you could be onto something..

This is the Reg for Kirk Ella, http://www.archive.org/stream/registerofkirkel11kirk#page/98/mode/2up    use the index manually as it dosen't bring all the words up !!

I wonder if this line of Watson transferred to Swanland Independent at around the time of Joseph c1740 ish  ???

Swanland Independent is lodged with the Treasure House, Beverley.

Pankpop.... Henry Watson of Swanland died c. 1723     do you mean he died at Swanland.  Also do you mean he came originally from Swanland too ??

I have been looking through familysearch.org at the Baptisms for Independent Swanland, there is lots n lots of Watson, possibly from the same line ancestor, same names repeating.

The first Joseph Watson is that of the possible father to Joseph Watson 1784 but I cannot trace the Joseph father back on the list ???  If he was one of the same family then he would be listed along with them, but nothing.
So, did he come in from elsewhere and possibly not related to the Swanland/Kirk Ella Watson ??? I ask this, because his marriage to Elizabeth Forge was at Rowley ???

This is the reference I found to Henry having died around 1723:

Also an interesting site on Swanland with some of the same Watson names, including a Joseph:
