1861 and 1871 lookup please
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 15:18 BST (UK) »
I am searching for a James Whittow whose son Thomas was born in South Wales ~1841.

Thomas married in 1864 in Liverpool and his marriage certificate shows his father's occupation as "farmer".  Thomas died six years later in Liverpool, possibly predeceasing his father James.

I have little to go on except the town of Merthyr Tydfil figures in "family myth & legend!"  The surname Whittow seems most common in Pembrokeshire but have had no success in locating a record there for James Whittow, who I estimate must have been born around 1815.

Any clues on James Whittow would be appreciated.  Cheers Peter

George Thomas HARRIES cousin 12 b.St Dogwells Pembroke

Hi Casalguidi
Thanks for the reply.  However I had previously found this record for William Whittow and his location, St Ishmaels, had raised my hopes of finding James since his son, Thomas, married Sarah Gullam who came from St Ishmaels, even though they married in L'pool.

Thanks all the same.    Peter

A quick search on 1837online 1861 census does show a Thomas G Whittow aged 19 living in Haverfordwest.
There are 3 other Whittows in the same area

Whittow George    78
Whittow Matthew  47
Whittow Thomas    51

It might be worth a look. Hope it helps

Have you got the name and occupation of Sarah's father? I maybe be able to help in that my wife's family of Gullams/gwilliams came from St Ishmaels and it isnt that big of a place.

Sarah Gullam's father was Richard Gullam who was a "Mariner".  Any further info from these censuses would be appreciated. Thanks Peter

I looked up the records I collected from Pembs Record Office. The only Richard Gullam around that time was married to a Mary Morse, he was a Mariner and they had children around 1840. I cant seem to find a baptism for Sarah however. I know it doesnt help with your initial search but I thought it might help you with the Gullam side. If any of that rings true, give me a shout as this is my wife's 'rabble' of Gullams. Ricard was born around 1823.
