Nellie Robertson Manchester Birth look-up

Hi  I have my greatgrandma Nellie Robertson on the 1891 census as born in Manchester in 1885  but i cannot find a birth at all for her can anyone help me. Thankyou.

Nellie was often 'short' for many other names, often Ellen, Eleanor, Helen type of thing. What does the 1901 or 1911 census say for her place of birth and date?

Hi that's very true I have her on the 1901 census as Helen then on the 1911 as Ellen born Liverpool. By 1901 she was in Sheffield. 1902 she married my great grandad James Hughes.
The family always knew her as Ellen but on her death there was some confusion about her name. I have recently spoke to someone who actually knew her and she said that her birth name was Nellie and that she was born in Manchester. Her parents were Scottish.

Do the other later censuses and the person who knew her confirm 1885 as the year of birth or is there some leeway as to age?

Hi again I have just checked the 1911 census and it actually says 1883, on the 1891 it says 1885.

Hmmm tricky.
if you do a search on Free BMD births for Robertson, no Christian name and dates of 1883 - 1886( to cover most bases) and Lancashire there are no obvious entries for Manchester that might give you a Nellie. Have a look through though and see if anything rings a bell from any other research you have done. I gather from another post in Scotland section you have not located her family in 1881 - if you could track her family back you might get further info to narrow it down. It is always possible she was not born in Manchester at all- memory playing tricks etc of which we are all guilty at times.

Hi Thanks this could actually be her as Hulme is just a few minutes away from Chorlton Upon
Medlock where i have her on the 1891 census. Thanks again.
