I think not ........ would you care to see a photo of me circa 1945 as a *Royal* Marine wearing a blue beret and a post I made last August 'A3 Squad Royal Marines?
Hippy' photo colouring is,as usual, 1st class ...... but to be correct his beret colouration needs correcting .......... never khaki ........ but certainly blue or green.
The green is for commando units only.
PS the highlighted *Royal* is important and respectful it was granted by George 111

I was under the impression that the blue beret was for RN and untrained RMs...the green one coming after they had passed out as "dagger men"

Ah! ...... the green beret might be so for today's Royal Marines' because I dont know.
In my whole service life on two ships I,and my messmates,only wore the blue beret.
It's many years since I left the service and have been in OZ over 50 years so I would have lost touch with the current RM dress.
The originator of the topic said WW2 and that period I do have some knowledge of and in those days the beret was either blue or green.
I am sure that other bootneck rootschatters will bring us up to speed on this.

Joe is correct
The Coveted Green Beret was introduced to the Royal Marines in 1942 when the Royal Marines Commandos were formed.Before that they wore blue (non commando trained Royals.eg Ships detachments etc still wore the blue beret for duration of WW2)
After the Army Commandos were disbanded in 1946 the Commando Role was given to The RM and all had to undergo Cdo Course to wear the Green Beret
Cant see any Royal Marines Commando flashes on battledress so I would go blue.

I can solve the problem as to what colour the beret is by asking my Dad! In the meantime I am attaching a new scan. I hope that it solves the problem when trying to restore. Thankyou all so much for working on this, it is very much appreciated.

Hi..... did'nt think that your dad might still be alive.......... please ask him how he came to be in OZ at the same period as me ........... he must have stayed here or,as I did,after meeting my future wife,go back to UK for demobilization and then come back permanently.
The beret is definitely blue I have no doubt at all ...... your dad and I would have been in that transition period where today's Royal Marines with the green beret were being formed as Ady described.

It was not until recently, when he was interviewed by his granddaughter, that I found out some of the details about his time in the forces. He is 88 and in pretty good health. His mind is still as sharp as a tack. Were you sent to Australia to defend against the Japs as well?

Your dad is a little (not much) older than me .......... he would I think have been demobbed in UK as they did not have a procedure here for UK personnel ... I had to go back and was demobbed at Cosham (Portsmouth) in late 1947 then waited until late 1948 for an ex-serviceman's free passage on the Asturias which was still in 'troopship' mode at that time .......... we might have arrived on the same vessel.
I dont know much about the Royal Marine's role in the defence of Australia I'm afraid but would like to have your dad's views on that.
