James Barrie
« on: Saturday 14 May 11 21:33 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather James Barrie born abt 1850 Rottenrow Glasgow died in the Govan Poorhouse on 9th Jan 1901. His application for poor relief gave his parents as James Barrie and Janet Glass. However on the approval page it gave his parents as James Barrie and Elizabeth Brownlie which of them would be correct. His parents are my brickwall

The problem is that on his DC and MC his mother is Janet Glass, I cannot find a record of a James Barrie and a Janet Glass but I can find a James Barrie and Elizabeth Brownlie with a son about the correct age. The poor relief record mentions both Janet and Elizabeth. I would prefer it to be Elizabeth but the problem is his DC and MC and I cannot find a BC.

Wonder if his father remarried then? You could search for a death record for Elizabeth or James or another marriage cert for James.

Yes I will have to concentrate more on James and Elizabeth unfortunatly they don't show up on the 1861 census. Difficult time at the end of Parish records and just before State Records. Possibly he was orphaned.

Hi Calcorn

That 1851 census entry that Portybelle mentions looks pretty likely to be your James with parents. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an entry showing for his birth/christening on the Old Parish Registers (nor the Roman Catholic registers), in this period before the start of official registration from 1855.

I think, like you say, it is likely his parents may have died whilst he was young. There is an entry for example in the 1861 for 10 year old James Barrie who shows as a boarder at the McAllister household in Old Kilpatrick Dumbartonshire. There are other young boarders showing there too, also from Glasgow.

With possible early deaths for his parents, James may well have got confused about his mother's name in later years, not surprisingly. However, I would probably look to the Poor Relief documentation and the confirmation of his mother's name as Elizabeth Brownlie. The Poor Relief Board would have carried out numerous checks before the granting of poor relief to James in his later years.

Is there anything in the names he gave to his own children that might give you more clues about his own family?

Monica  :)

Thanks everyone for your input I now appreciate the benefits of using rootschat The deaths of John Barrie and Janet Barry on SP are not mine as they were both children.

The James Barrie that died in Govan Poorhouse only daughter was called Elizabeth. He had a son William Galloway Barrie.

If his mother was Elizabeth Brownlie he had sisters Jessie and Elizabeth Barrie. Elizabeth Barrie married an Edward Galloway.

So everything points to Elizabeth Brownlie with the exception of his DC and MC.

I appreciate all the help

Janet and Jessie are common first name variants. What was the age of the child, Janet Barrie, that Sancti found a death entry for? Was wondering if this could be the Jessie who showed in the household in 1851. Elizabeth I can see, I think in 1861, and then her marriage to Edward Galloway. Couldn't find anything for Jessie (checked also as Janet) in later censuses.
