Brown's of Stoney Middleton
« on: Friday 13 May 11 21:35 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information on the Brown family from Stoney Middleton.  John Brown married Eliza Bentley in 1844, they were both born about 1821, & they had 5 children Robert 1847, Sarah Jane 1849, James 1852, Ann 1856 & Alice 1859.  I believe John Brown died sometime after the 1861 census because Eliza married James Froggatt in 1863.  Anymore information on this family would be of great help.

hi there

I assume you have the marriage cert for the couple but just in case, the father's names and occupations from freereg.org are John Brown, miner and Robert Bentley , miner.

Have a look at freebmd and search for deaths for John Brown with Bakewell as the district (which covers Stoney Middleton), there is nothing registered between 1861 and 1863, so could John have died earlier or maybe they divorced?

Shirl
North,Noble,Harrison,Seller - North Riding Yorks parishes
Brown,Brooks,Watson - Belper/Duffield Derbys
Hole - Ashover Derbys
Webb, Flavell, Mason - Staffs (mainly Sedgley)
Bevan,Beamond - Chirbury Shropshire
Longridge - Northumberland/Durham
Freeman - Hampshire, Oxfordshire,Sussex
Smith - Derbyshire and Yorkshire
Whitehead - Yorkshire
Morris - St Pancras Yorkshire etc

Hi Shirl,

Thank-you for your help. I can't find John Brown's death even though it must be in that time period of 1861-63. I have John on the 1861 census with his wife Eliza, I've then got Eliza Brown, widow, marrying James Froggatt June 29th 1863.  Eliza Froggatt is on the 1871 census a widow again living with her son Robert Brown & daughter Alice Brown, still living in Stoney Middleton, the 3 of them next show up on the 1881 census all under the name Brown living in Sheffield & that is the last trace I have been able to find of Eliza, her son Robert or daughter Alice.
I've been trying to find marriages or deaths for Robert & Alice Brown as well as the deaths of their parents John & Eliza without any success. I don't know why John's death isn't coming up anywhere you would think that would have been quite easy to find knowing roughly when he died.

Thanks again

Hi again

I wonder if he perhaps died in hospital so the death may be registered in another district? Long shot but may be worth a try, it doesn't look like there are any MIs for the Brown family either , a few Froggats though

Good luck with your research

Hi Shirl,

Yes, I've wondered the same thing, perhaps he died outside the area. I haven't found a burial for John or Eliza at Stoney Middleton so maybe they are buried in Sheffield or Chesterfield.
As for the Froggatt's I know Eliza's second husband James Froggatt was married to a woman named Mary & they had two children Ann & William.
On the 1851 Stoney Middleton census John & Eliza are living with her parents Robert & Jane Bentley, next door to them are Eliza's sister Sarah & her husband Jacob Eidson and next door to them is James Froggatt & his wife Mary. I found a death for Mary Froggatt,  Bakewell 1852.
I think I'll have to search beyond Stoney Middleton now though.

Thanks for the help

You may well have found all the answers by now, but if not I believe Eliza(Froggatt) died in the Sheffield district in 1887, Robert Brown in 1890.
I too have been unable to find John Brown's death record.
Daughter Alice Brown married James Agutter in Bristol register office in 1883.

Hi Jogobo,
Just found your PM - I'm only just finding out how this works! As I haven't posted enough to reply there, I'll add a bit here.
Eliza/john Brown are my ancestors through Alice. I worked back to them from census info - it was a bit of a surprise that Alice was born in Derbyshire as I thought all my family were southerners.
I went to Stoney Middleton this summer, and found the gravestone - still legible - to Jane Bentley  (Eliza's mother who died in 1865) and Robert, who may or may not have been her father.
