Mills
« on: Friday 13 May 11 17:34 BST (UK) »
My great . step grandfather was a Harry Mills .. who I remember as a kid. He lived in Caradoc Township, Ontario Canada (at Christina). As a young man of about 20 yrs old he had come alone (at least I thing it was alone) to Canada .. and got a job working for a Caradoc farmer ... met a neighbor girl .. who had lost her husband .. and was trying to raise a small son .. and keeping house for a relation..... they married here in Ont in 1915 .. with the marriage information giving Harry's parents (back in England) as George Mills & Mary Dale. Harry was down as 26 yrs old.
It was always know in the family that Harry had been from in and around London, England ... but it was also said that he did not keep in touch much, with relations in the old country. I believe he had one brother in the Eng. Army .. there is thought to be a picture of him in uniform .. in India?
Harry shows in the Canadian 1911 Census .. as 21 yrs old .. having imigrated to Canada in 1910.
If I am on the right track .. I have him born at Plaiston, Essex ... but I am looking for any additional information that could be found on this family.
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

In 1901 the family are living at 54 Chargeable Street with another son Frederick aged 2 born Plaistow Essex. The older boys George & Charles are no longer living there.

Yes I think that is likely them. Harry had one daughter, here in Ontario. And later in life .. when she was able to travel .. and did go to England .. she always said ... " I wish I had listened more .. to all my Dad said .. about what part of London & area, he had grew up in" .. but sadly she is gone now also.
