Hi Pels, I had only compared it with 1891, I agree it does look very likely.

I,ve tried searching for Edwin putting every single letter of the alphabet in front of UTT and every vowel in the middle of N -TT. :(

Patrish,  I tried all sorts of wildcards too, then I thought I'd just search anyone called Edwin b. 1847 +/- 5 years in Bristol, hoping to see a likely mistranscription - nothing  ::)

Maybe he was working away from home and the people he was staying with gave the wrong name.
