Weeley baptisms
« on: Friday 13 May 11 09:13 BST (UK) »
Is it possible for some kind person to look-up the baptism of one of my ancestors in Weeley?

His name: John THORP(E) ; he married in 1828 in Weeley at the age of 21

but, in the 1841 Census, he is supposed to be 45 , born in Thorpe le Soken.  He is NOT marked in the Thorpe le Soken baptisms  registers 1796 - 1810...

Living in France, it is difficult for me to investigate. Can anyboby please help?

Regards,

Riboga

Thank you for the suggestion, but I already had had a look on that site.  There were many many John Thorpe in Britain around 1800 and I can't find the only one I'm interested in !

Have you looked at other census details? the 1841 only has wheher born in county or not. Also  I assume you must have chcked the Hugh Wallis site. Where is Thorpe le Soken?
Brown, Twizell, Storey & fenwick  from Northumberland, Parkinson, from Lincolnshire, Kelly, Kinsella  & Mcguire from Ireland. Mellor originally from Derbyshire, Allens from Norfolk and Jackson originally from Sutton Coldfield.

Hi

Unless one is a minor (under 21) ages are not usually given on marriages before the start of civil registration 1st July 1837.
If it is John Thorpe on the censuses in Weeley then on the 1841 census John's age is given as 40. Adult ages, those over 15, are usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census. He states born in county. 1851 census his age is 52 and he states his birthplace as Thorpe Essex, so birth circa 1798/1799 if accurate, depending whether his birth fell before or after census night. On the 1861 census he states his age as 63 and a birthplace of Thorpe-le-Soken Essex, so a birth year of circa 1797/1798. 1871 census aged 75 birthplace Thorpe-le-Soken Essex birth year circa 1795/6.

Deaths Jun 1874   THORP  John  78  Tendring  4a 161

Where you are born is unfortunately not always where you were baptised but you may just have missed him by taking the 'cut' on the baptisms at Thorpe-le-Soken from 1796. In the search between 1796-1810 were any other Thorpe baptisms found? A check of Weeley baptisms would have to be before 1804.

There were two churches in Thorpe-le-Soken besides the Anglican church.

◦St. Michael. Anglican
◦Baptist. Non conformist
◦French Church. Non conformist

Neither of the other two churches seem to have surviving registers for the period you are interested. Were John's children baptised as Anglicans?

On the 1851 census there is a Joseph T Thorpe aged 38 who gives his birthplace as Thorpe Essex. On the 1861 and 1871 censuses there is a William Thorpe aged 60 and 69 (Thorp in 1861) with a birthplace of Thorpe Essex. His age switches to 89 in 1881 but he is a pauper in the workhouse so not necessarily the one supplying information for the census.

Hi,

I'm so grateful to everyone trying to help, thank you so much.

John Thorp(e) was married in 1828 in Weeley by licence and his age of 21 is that marked on the licence.

I did have the information of the 1851,1861,1871 censuses, but John's baptism isn't marked on Thorpe le Soken registers from 1796 till 1802.
Yes, there was a couple Henry and Sarah Thorpe who baptized their children in Thorpe: Abraham 1792, Harriett 1796, William 1801 and Sarah 1802.  William is the one you mention Valda.

My only hope is that you suggest: a check of Weeley baptisms before 1804.

Regards,

Riboga

Hi

Marriage licences of the period usually read something like

Apperared personally .......of the parish of...... in the county of........ a bachelor aged twenty one years and upwards.....

Not giving the exact age - just specifying they were of age.

Hi Valda,

Thank you for the information. On the licence, it only says " of the age of twenty one years"  whithout the " upwards", but now, thanks to you, I realize it only means John was of age !

I really feel relieved!
