Castlehill Cottage, Erskine 1898
« on: Friday 13 May 11 09:02 BST (UK) »
Twins were born in Castlehill Cottage, Erskine in 1898 but unfortunatly died a few days later at the same address, according to the Birth & Death Certs.

I do not think this was the residential address of the parents so would anyone have heard of this cottage in connection to births in Erskine or be able to locate it?

Hi John

The 1901 census shows Castle Hill Cottages and Castle Hill Whitemors Farm. They both look to have normal family households living there, ie, residential.

What makes you think this wasn't the family's usual address at the time of the births and deaths?

Hi Monica,
Thank you for your reply but more importantly thank you for the question that you asked.
The address of the family concerned in 1901 was at West Ferry Lodge, Erskine and I was thinking that they would have been living there in 1898 when the twins were born.

The name Castle Hill had not twigged with me until you mentioned it in connection with whitemoss farm.
In fact, on the marriage certificate for the couple concerned in 1897, the bride gave her address as Whitemoss farm where she was a servant and I had presumed, wrongly, that after the marriage they would have moved on to a new residence. Obviously not! He worked on a farm nearby so I guess they just moved out of single accommodation on the farm's into a cottage on or next the Whitemoss farm.

So, thank you very much for the question and for answering my query!

Regards,
John.

Hello

My grandfather farmed Whitemoss fram from 1924? to 1981

Castlehill cottage was 2 cottages on a hill above Whitemoss farm.  The cottages had no electricity nor water (water from a well 200 yards away).  The cottages are now in ruins.  My cousins and I played there in the 60s.

The cottages had a wonderful view of the Clyde and Ben Lomond to the North.

Regards

Kath Taylor

Hi Kath,

Back in July you replied to a query I had posted regarding Castlehill Cottages on Whitemoss Farm in Erskine.
Could I ask if you could please get back in touch with me as I would like to try and locate where exactly these cottages were on the farm.

Best regards,
John
