Military Medal - Cuthbert Hickman
« on: Friday 13 May 11 01:01 BST (UK) »
Can anybody point me in the right direction regarding medals? I have looked on the National Archives website and seem to go round in circles. I have a relative who I know received the Military Medal but cannot find a medal card that references it ( I have the medal card for the standard campaign medals) or a citation. The person in question is Cuthbert Hickman, born in 1893 in London so a British subject but enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in WWI.

As usual, any help appreciated.

hi ronin56

you need to look in the london gazette for him i,ve had a quick look but didn,t find him but he will be mentioned somewhere i,m sure the other thing is that with the mm as so many were given out usually no citation will be with the record just name rank and serial number it may be worth getting in touch with the regiment he was in they may know more ,.
i have my gt uncles mm and so far i,ve never found him in the gazette but i know it,s me i never have been very good at navigating the gazette  ;D hopefully someone else will be along to put us both right .

Is this him? No mention there of a MM
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=498096

Yes, that's him, I have that record, but now I'm severely embarrassed because I've been looking for the medal for the wrong brother! It was Frank Henry Charles Hickman who was awarded the Military Medal, not Cuthbert. He also died in France. I'll resume my search using the correct information. Thanks for drawing my attention to the error Neil. :-[

If your Hickman served in the New Zealand forces you may be able to get his service records from their government's archives.  I have not tried this myself, but the Australian site is very helpful for any Diggers [and puts the UK lot to shame!].

As Ainslie says, try New Zealand Archives too.
Cuthbert's papers are available to view here:

Neil, that's brilliant! From a quick search I have access to his whole service record. Thank you again.

Hello Ronin56, You will no doubt have Cuthberts war records from NZ by now. He went to Cambridge in 1918 on an OTC course with my grandfather and about 13 other NZ soldiers.   I don't suppose you have a photo of Cuthbert?

Ven

Hi Ven,

Yes I have his records. He appears to have been detached to the Officer Cadet Unit from 27/04/18 to 14/05/18 which is what I presume you are referring to. OTC = Officer Training Course?

Unfortunately I don't have a photograph of him but if I come across one in the course of my research I'll be sure to let you know.
