Records office day out
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 21:17 BST (UK) »
Ive been to visit the RO at Gloucester today, not really to do any further research, but to get hold of hard copies of existing research (Dont want to get in too deep at the moment as other branches have pressing needs).

Everything was going well until I found the baptism of my 3x GGrandmother Maria Ash. (pic attached).

Her father is William Ash but in the 1841 census (Class: HO107; Piece 1181; Book: 18; Civil Parish: Kemble; County: Wiltshire; Enumeration District: 19; Folio: 14; Page: 22) it seems to be a John Ash. Ive had a look just incase im confusing it with another Maria Ash from Kemble but this is the only one.

Can anyone offer any advice here please?

Remember 1841 census does not show relationships, so she may not have been with her parents on census night.
Or maybe William was known as John sometimes or vice versa?
Have you got her on later censuses?
Who does she name as father on her marriage cert?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Have you found the marriage(s) of a William and/or John Ash to an Elizabeth?

Also it's not unknown for there to be mistakes in parish registers as the entries weren't always done immediately or mistakes in the transcription of the census sheets when they were copied into the enumerators notebook.

Did Maria have siblings?  Have you any records relating to their births or baptisms?  Can you find a death registration or burial record of John/William Ash or Elizabeth Ash - Elizabeth's record will probably say wife/widow of.....

I think I will have to get her marriage certificate sooner than id hoped, but she down as Maria Harper in 1851.

Her siblings that ive found are (with baptism dates):

Mary Ann - 12/10/1806
Elizabeth - 27/11/1808
Hannah - 01/07/1813
Sarah - 06/11/1814
William - 23/11/1817
John - 16/071820

Im struggling to find any of these on the 1841 or 51 census. :(

there's a burial in Kemble 19/4/1829 of an 8 year old John Ash.

Hannah Ash buried 6/7/1813 aged 1 month at Kemble

possible for Mary Ann?
