St Clears Carmarthenshire Early Census and pre Census

..I am looking for parent details of a Martha Lewis born around 1833/1834 in St Clears, Carmarthenshire.  I believe her father was a James Lewis .....

...James Lewis is the name of her father shown on her marriage certificate. He was an agricultural labourer, but he was deceased at the time of her wedding.

There is a Martha Lewis, daughter of James Lewis and Ann Thomas on IGI. It says that she was born on 2nd October 1831 and Christened at Bethlehem Independent Congregational, Saint Clears, Carmarthenshire on 26th November 1831

Cheers Morgan.  that's the information I have and I think that's correct.  Is there any way of finding the parents of James and Ann?  The surnames at least pre marriage?

There is a Christening in 1813 of James Lewis at the same place, but no parents named. It is always difficult with common names like Ann Thomas - there are too many listed just on Bethlehem Independent Congregational. Even with access to the Church records it will be hard to get the right couple as they will have married pre-1837.

Shame we can't find them on 1841

I have a marriage for James Lewis, Llanfihangel Abercowin ,and Ann Thomas, St Clears, in St Clears Church - 1 Dec 1812.

The following children baptised to James and Ann Lewis in Bethlehem Chapel, Pwlltrap

1815  Dynah
1819  Anna
1822  Sarah
1825  Margaret
1828  Jonah
1831  MARTHA
1834  Liza, died 1835
1837  Ann
There is also a James Lewis bap in 1813, no parents given, who could possibly be theirs as they married in 1812.

Also in St Clears marriages is John Lewis, Llanfihangel Abercowin, to Sarah Price, St Clears - 17 May 1787 - who might possibly be James Lewis's parents.

Griffith married Ann December 1802 age 25 well they appeared to have waited a while before having David in 1819
However checking the I G I's I found Mary 1813 and Margaret 1826 it is more than likey there were earlier births, maybe a James.
ACCORDING TO THE I G I David, Eliza , Benjamin ,Margaret and Mary were definately their children But Martha and Ann could not have been, I wonder if they were their grandchildren.
Martha possibly married a Thomas her father could have been James an earlier son of Griffith Ann  also a dau of James?

Hi Morgan,

Not sure if they are my family. My (H)Anna Lewis was born c1792. She married James Saer in Whitland church in 1813 and all their children from 1816 - 1837 were baptised in Bethlehem Chapel. James Saer was baptised in St Clears church in 1787 ( as Lewis Saer - maybe a hint to his mother's name as I can't find his parents marriage) and his parents are buried in the church, so I think the Nonconformist must have come from Anna's side. Anna died in 1839 so she isn't in any of the census to see where she was born. She could be from St Clears or any of the parishes around. Lower Llanboidy (Whitland), St Clears and Llanfihangel Abercowin are all so close together. They lived in Pwlltrap, not so very far from this Lewis family.
