where is Homes Chappell COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 03:18 BST (UK) »
I think I am looking for Homes Chappell & can't find it.

In a 1653 Will, of an Elizabeth WOODCOCKE of Gilmorton in the County of Leicester, she leaves;
unto the poore in Gilmorton Twentie shillings, plus
to the Poore in Homes Chappell Twentie shillings

Can anyone correct me and/or tell me where this place is, please?

Regards
Grantley

There is a Holmes Chapel in Cheshire ....  :-\ Does Elizabeth have any connection to Cheshire?

Thankyou Ruskie,

I don't know, but I would doubt that this locality/parish would be outside the then boundries of Leicester, as the only County mentioned is Leicester.

She was described as "widdow late wife of Randolph WOODCOCKE of the towne and County aforesaid Clarke".

The Chapell wouldn't be Chapel as in a church would it?  :-\

Could the first letter of Chappel be something other than a 'C'?

I assumed "Chappell", as it was similar to the attached "Chattells"

Grantley

All I know about her at present is this Will.

Yes, it is similar to the first letter C in Chattells. I can't see it as a C (looks more like an I) but I have no experience reading old documents and I know you do.  ;)

All I can think to suggest is that perhaps Homes Chappell no longer exists, or it is such a tiny place that it's not mentioned on Genuki or a google search.  ;) Not constructive I'm sorry.

I hope one of the Leicestershire experts will be along soon to help.

This is part of the Will, that contains this hard to locate place.

Hope it helps.

Xin,

you have had me checking my transcript & I started to doubt the letter "p", but here it is in the word "payd".

I would have guessed that the place was "local" to Gilmorton, considering it's casual mention.
