The Medal Reunited Project
« on: Wednesday 11 May 11 18:04 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys,

Recently i have been trying to reunite a WW1 service medal, with an appropriate descendant.  Unfortunately I have been unable to locate anyone and it made me think about how many medals of our ancestors are held by private collectors, medal dealers alike.

I had an idea and wanted to run it past people first.  I have begun putting together a list of medals available on the internet via online dealers, ebay etc and have emailed many of them for a list of names, service numbers and medal types they hold.  I will list this on my website so people can see what is available.  It would be good to also be able to get a list of this information for people searching for medals also that can easily be cross referenced and hopefully some matches found.

Obviously no personal information would be displayed only a unique "seekers ID" and the name, service number and medal type being sourced.

I know personally i have been searching for my ancestors medals for many years and always stop and look in antiques shop if passing.  I think it would be good to have a central database.

Before i get too involved any feedback and thoughts would be appreciated.

many thanks

nikw

I think it's a really good idea.  I would love to be able to find medals which belonged to my ancestors.

And we've just this week reunited a descendant with medals from a WW2 soldier!

You might find there are already existing websites doing just this.

There definitely is, or was, one such, though I can't remember what it was called.  You could try www.britishmedalforum.com  Somebody there will know.
UK census content is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Transcriptions are my own.

Hi,

I am pleased to say that after the interest shown from my original post, The Medal Reunited Project Launched shortly after.  There are now over 3000 medals on the list that you can search that we have currently tracked their location.

You can also supply names of interest via our name alert system which has actually had lots of success.

Their is a dedicated website being developed currently so keep an eye out for the launch but the current system is suitably functional.

View the list via this link: http://www.uvgenealogy.co.uk/29701.html

Any questions drop me a line if not have a look at the list and see if there are any names you recognise.

Many thanks
