James Ost Burial, 1829, St Mary's , Cork.
« on: Wednesday 11 May 11 17:56 BST (UK) »
I have a record of the burial of a James Ost on 6.11.1829, at the church of St Mary's, Shandon, Cork.
However there is no clear info to say whether it was an adult or a child.
Is anyone likely to be exploring that graveyard, who would be prepared to hunt for his grave, please? Or could anyone tell me how to find further info relating to this burial ?

Thank you for any help.....even a tiny clue!

Hi,

There are two churches currently in Shandon.  St Anns the famous
Church of Ireland which has a very old grave yard attached and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Mary's & St. Annes which doesn't have  a grave yard attached.

The St Marys graveyard you mention was situated at the foot of Shandon Street. The Cork City Council had a publication this year on
"Cork City's burial places". St Marys church was built in 1693 and "taken down" in 1879 (ref O'Shea 1943a.32). In 1879 it was replaced by another church located a half mile away at Sundays Well.

"During the 1930's the site of St Marys Shandon was cleared. The grave slabs which were supposed to be there were missing"
To see if the Church of Ireland hold burial records for St Marys you would need to contact the "Representative church body of Ireland" in Dublin to see if they have them.  They don't do look ups so you would have to get some one in Dublin to search them for you(provided they have records).  www.ireland.anglican.org/library.
That's about all you can do.

I meant to say you could also look up the newspapers for that date at one of the libraries to see if an age is mentioned on the death notice.  It often is if it's a child.

Thank you for that info, Mary.

I had rather given up on this James Ost burial, as getting nowhere ! But I will do as you suggest and see if I can solve the question regarding the approx. age of James Ost. If, and when, I find it I will post it here.
Many thanks,

Kilmeny

Hi,

Went to the library today and looked up newspaper "The Cork Constitution" for the month of November 1829 and unfortunately no reference to the death of J Ost.

I then had a look at Rosemary Ffolliott's newspaper index for births , marriages and deaths and no OST, Yost, or Host listed at all.

It is a pity there wasn't anything there.
