In view of what Barbara has said, I had a look on Scotlandspeople (I had 2 credits left) and found this:

Samuel Lingard. age 27. district of Portobello, Edinburgh.

Unfortunately you'll have to view the actual return to get more information and that's 5 credits.

Mabel's birth is also there, registered in Portobello, but there was no image available.

His address on enlisting in 1916 was 69 Willowbrae Rd, Edinburgh. Here's a few details from the record.

It says he married Isabella Fidler in Chorley, 17 June 1908. He enlisted 11 December 1916 and gave as occupation Motor Driver. Must have got fed up of seling shoes! I think it says he was a Caterpillar driver in the army. He was born in Preston. Not much on his service history, but it looks like he was stationed in Egypt, until 15 November 1919, attached to the Balloon Coy.
And he had a 34 inch chest, a scar on the back of his his right wrist, and two moles under his right armpit  ;D

Just noticed another child, they must have added this after he enlisted -  William, born 13 July 1917 at Willowbrae Rd Edinburgh.

Hello Everyone

Thanks very much for the info you have found upto now.. I have been trying to locate them for several years

After recieving a birth certificate today for Hilda Lingard... it gave me a extra clue , hence my message on this site.

I spoke to my friend who is also a related to these Lingards, She was really happy we have made a little progress.

Supposedly Samuel and family, went over to Ireland? and they had a shop... which was visited to by a relation c 1940s?

So maybe one day i will find their recent decendants.

Thanks for the help so far
