It really shows how co-operative working can get results - we had the same process with a photo posted by Keith Bateman, and in no time someone was able to say 'I walk past that every day'!

cheers

Paul

Didn't see this thread earlier (or I would have had my twopennorth about the cars) but have just read it from beginning to end!   What great communal detective work!  Well done all of you.

The painting by Lowry on the site mentioned: http://www.visitcumbria.com/wc/wathch.htm

- the signpost and the street light are in the same positions as in the photo!

Hi Trysan... Did you notice that the artist also couldn't make out what the sign said!   ;D

I know this is sorted but just to finalise it heres a photo taken today from roughly the same place, I only live 5 miles away, for everones information the road sign would have said: (left) Whitehaven 5 miles, (right) Ennerdale Bridge 3 miles

I wonder if the people hanging about are any relation to those in the original, I was considering telling the local rag but as its not my thread I won't

Congrats everyone I do wish I'd seen it sooner and saved all the time, but where would the fun have been I hope the pic works

My dear Andrew R!

Thank you so very much for posting your picture! It will really be a special delight for my mother, too!

I would be very curious if any relations of mine still live in the area. Methinks they came from PATTINSON stock and my line had a farm (High Croft or The Hill or Grundy Croft)) nearby the picture as well.

Please tell the 'local rag' if you have time.  Oh, please let me/us know if you hear back. Oh boy, wouldn't it be something if family still lives there?!
Good grief! Excited I am!  ;D
Wishing you well, Donna

Okey dokey... I've had a chance to settle down.

Andrew R:
The picture is just perfect! I've printed a glossy off of your posted photo... I hope that is okay.  I wish I could make that same step in time... hopefully someday. Wow!  I can see that the same ole power poles are there... but, maybe a new street light... plus, the street sign doesn't look nearly as menacing. :) [Dang though... we cannot make out a licence plate! Hee!]

Anyway... yes indeedy, wouldn't it be awesome if someone on the street in my original photo would say, "Hey! That's me! The year was 196? and we were just ... "?

Happy day to you, Donna

P.S. I forgot to ask others if I should ask permission from Trystan and Sarah regarding the "local rag".
