William T Potter
« on: Monday 09 May 11 02:52 BST (UK) »
Hello
I have been searching for years for an uncle William(Will)who left Wales for Canada before WW2.
I have always been told that he went to Winnepeg but now I am not sure. Non of the older people of the family are alive, well those that would know.
He was born   11.1.1908 in 11 Farm Rd,Pontlottyn, Wales.
His mother was Edith Potter(nee Martin) and his father was Samuel Potter.  Samuel died in WW1.

His siblings were: Samuel, Horace, Issaac(died in a motor bike accident),Bessie, Edith and Harold.
If anyone could give any information about Will and his life in Cananda that would be greatly appreciated. Now I would imagine that by now that uncle Will would have died.
Look forward to hearing from you.  Avril(nee Potter)

Hi

I think Trevor's  Lady Tyler Terrace one, where he is listed as a miner,  looks quite likely as the address is in Rhymney -  Pontlottyn is not far from there.

Hi there Trevor and Gnu
Thanks for the info. Yes Lady Tyler Terrace is where he used to live.( I was born in 28 Lady T.T)
I didn't think it would have been the Doric because he never left Wales before going to Canada.
How can I now find out where he went to when he landed at Quebec? I have previously tried getting into the Canadian information but I hit a brick wall.
Again many thanks for your help.

Cheers
Avril  :) :)

hi avril
it,s good were getting somewhere then with this i was hoping someone on the ground in canada would pick up on this by now it,s so much easier when you have someone from the country involved lending a hand , anyway have you looked at the site  - library and archives of canada - it does have census data as well as bmd,s although i must say i find it a bit daunting some times myself using archives in far away places patience is the key i,m afraid  ;D also google quebec archives and see what that brings up , i,m afraid that,s the best advice i can give , i always google everything if it,s something new to me it,s amazing what it comes up with at times .
best wishes
trevor

ps fancy you being born in the same terrace sounds like me i was surrounded by gt aunts and uncles when young  ;D

Hi Trevor
Like you I thought some one on the ground in Canada might have picked up on this. Not to worry.
I will take your advise and look at the archives of Quebec. I tried tonight googling some archives but got nowhere.
This is the last mystery of the family so I am determined to get it.  There must be some rele's of ours out there.
If you know of anyone who wants help in tracing people in NZ let me know.

Cheers

Hi again

There are masses of Canadian Resources listed here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,372.0.html

I've done a quick check on the Manitoba deaths/marriages but can't find anything, so I've PMed one of the Canadian members with a link to this thread to see if they can help.

Hi Gnu
Thanks for your help. I have just looked quick at the info that you have given and my goodness there is a lot of stuff there.
Like you I have just e mailed a cousin of mine of who William T Potter is his uncle.  Now he lives in the states and is very very very  new to genealogy. I have had an e mail from him and he has a daughter....where....you got it CANADA. so I have asked him nicely to see if she can also help.

Again many many thanks
Cheers

If you think William lived in Winnipeg you can use the Ask a Librarian service of the Winnipeg Public Library. They will do a free search over a ten year period in the Henderson Directories for the City of Winnipeg.

If you wanted to try searching for an obituary the Winnipeg Free Press archives are online (there's a very small fee).

Best of luck!  :)
