Difficulty reading Census entry - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 07 May 11 17:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am hoping someone can help decipher the locations shown in this extract taken from an SP image of the 1851 Census.

The second line is supposed to show the birth location of my 4th Great Grandmother but I am struggling to find any reference to a parish in the County of Renfrewshire that comes close as the only parish beginning with "A" is Abbey

When looking at the SP image I have compared each letter with all the adjacent entries to find similaritires in handwriting style, and accordingly I interpret the entry as Renfrew, Ashent.  However there is no Parish with such a name nor can I find any village or settlement with such a name.  In order to make progress I would appreciate any comment that confirms my interpretation is correct or not (with an alternative suggestion)

All assistance gratefully received

Regards

The k in Clackmannan and the k in Lanark are identical to the 3rd letter in your word, I thought it may be Asken or Askent though I cant find any thing by google, may be a post on the Renfreshire board could produce a result. could it be a phonetic version of Erskine?

I am with you on that one, James. FreeCen shows a few birth places as ASKEN, Renfrewshire on their 1851 transcriptions.

Have you been able to double check against any other census entries, MacS?

There is an entry for example in 1851 for the family of a Daniel Landies and Janet Baxter and children. Wife Janet shows as born in Renfrewshire - Asken in 1851. A bad transcription in 1861, shows Janet Landies born in 'Palish, Ekine' - Erskine Parish?

Many thanks to each and all who have replied.

I have previously posted on the Renfrewshire board with a few replies giving a potential lead for a settlement known as Ashton, Gourock in the Innerkip Parish which I will follow up on.

I can also see the potential in Erskine (good call macintosh).

I will spend some time looking for similar entries as suggested.  So far the only documented info I have for this individual is the above 1851 Census entry or as a named person in O.P.R. entries for her childrens birth which occur in Anderston (Barony Parish) c1829-1844.  Although she should appear in the 1841 Census it won't name her birth location so there is little scope for progress there.  She doesn't appear at the family home in the 1861 and is listed as deceased in her daughters marriage in 1865.  All checks for a death entry 1855-1865 have returned no hits which leaves the possibility she died before statutory registration and as such there may be limited information to cross reference against.

Once again I thank all who have replied.
