I did think it was saying sargeant also but not sure whether they have spelt it like it should be.  Have you looked at the rest of the people on the census page as well? Does anything appear that can account to it i.e. anyone with a similar profession or rank.

Have since found him on childrens marriage certs as agent and also tailor!

Collecting  weekly money from people on the tailors on account customers list . Like corner shops did. Just an idea. Bob a week pay back.
