William Marlow from Alton/Chawton

Looking for kin of William Marlow that was born circa 1800 in Alton/Chawton. He married Ann Stacey and had  James b 1826, William b 1829, Mary Ann b 1831, Robert b 1833, Matilda b 1837, Thomas b 1838, Elizabeth b 1841, Charlotte b 1842 and Alfred b 1848.

Familysearch suggests that William may be the son of John and Martha, along with James, George and Mary Ann.

They are certainly worth following up.

Dear Susan - William and Ann Marlow were living in Chawton in 1851 with their children. William was said to be 50 and born in Alton whereas Ann was 48 and born in Newton [Valence]. Their home was in one of the cottages owned by Thomas Arnold near the French Horn which was demolished when the railway was extended from Alton to Winchester. There is now an embankment to mark the spot.
In 1841, William and his family were in one of ‘Coombes Cottages’ which used to be to the East of the White Horse in the High Street. They have also been pulled down.
I suspect that William was not too sure of his age and/or he might not have been baptised immediately he was born and that he was the William Marlow baptised in St Lawrence’s, Alton, on 12 October 1804, son of John and Martha. They were married on 19 June 1802 in Alton. One of the witnesses at William’s marriage was a Mary Marlow and he had a sister Mary Ann who seems to have been about 4 years younger. John and Martha were said to be of the parish of Alton.
The last child that I have found for John and Martha was in 1808 and a John Marlow was buried in Alton on 11 Feb 1811 and, sadly, the age at death was not recorded at that time so John’s date of birth is not known.
There seem to be 2 possible baptisms for John -
2 Oct 1772   William and Sarah of Selborne   seems more likely?
8 Feb 1782   Thomas and Sarah of Wield
although it must be remembered that the 1770s to 1780s are a time when there are lots of gaps in the registers of St Lawrence in Alton.
William was buried in Chawton on 11 June 1859.   
The area where William lived in Chawton lies near The Butts and became part of Alton in the 1930s. Yours Jane
