« on: Thursday 05 May 11 16:32 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the grave of my GGgrandfather James Armstrong who died in Raleigh, Kent County, Ontario Dec 29, 1917.  I have copy of his death  certificate but unable to locate cemetery.  I would like to photograph his grave site for our family history.

Hello and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :).

The death record indicates James was buried in Chatham Ontario. You can look for his burial at this website link .... then use the link to 'contributing organization' to find someone who might be available to assist you.

http://ocfa.islandnet.com//

Alternatively, a google for Chatham cemeteries should provide contact info for you to verify his place of burial but won't likely provide a photo.

If your local public library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition you would be able to see the image of the death record and print it for your records.

Is this the James Armstrong who served in the Crimean war? If so, I believe he was probably buried at Maple Leaf cemetery. You might try contacting these folks and see if they can provide you with confirmation or point you in the correct direction:

Hi,

Sometimes the cemetery is dependent on the religion of the deceased. You can check various Kent County records at:

Good hunting.

Hi,

His wife Emma died on 16 Feb 1923.  According to her death record, the place of burial was "Chatham" and the date of burial was 19 Feb 1923.  James' death record also just said "Chatham".   I would assume they are buried together, so looking for them both in the same cemetery could narrow things down.

Try this link:

It looks as if the municipality controls the Maple Leaf Cemetery (which seems to be huge).  Perhaps you can contact them and ask if your relatives are there.  An earlier post provided a link to a site that has many photos of graves in this cemetery.

Also, the above link to the Chatham/Kent cemetery page has a PDF list of privately owned cemeteries in the area.  Contact information is provided.   See the "other cemeteries" option on the left of the page.

You know the death dates for James and Emma.  Have you tried looking for an obituary in a local paper?  Sometimes they say where a person is buried.

RK

Hi,

I have looked a bit more and I see that Emma was James second wife.  They may not have been buried together.  Perhaps you could check for his first wife (trying to find her name now).  Maybe her death registration or obituary will have a place of burial?

Do you know where other relatives are buried?  It is fairly common to have several members of a family buried in the same cemetery.

OK.

First wife was Catherine.  She died in Raleigh Twp, Kent on Aug 25, 1908.  No place of burial is given, but she is listed as a Methodist.   As J.A.M. said above, knowledge of someone's religion can sometimes help to narrow down place of burial.
