Hi folks

I've come (very) late to this discussion, but may be able to add something.  In the process of research for a history of the Sole Brothers Circus, I am researching the Perry line, as the two families are seriously inter-linked in the circus story.

I too have been interested in Flora - I'm always ready to be side-tracked by a good story.  I found her mentioned in the death notice of her brother William George Perry in 1918.  She was referred to as "Mrs Brightwell".  I went searching for her marriage, but didn't find it.  Given her desertion of James Tancho, it's likely she never did formally marry.  I then found her in two electoral rolls in the Kennedy division in Queensland in 1913 and 1922, living with a William Frederick Brightwell.

I have never been able to find her death under any likely combination of names, but will keep searching.

cheers, lbstable

You will find on the previous thread that Rod has located her death in 1923 under one of her "AKAs" ;D

For interest, I do see a Flora BRIGHTWELL in Cloncurry as early as 1905 and 1908 on the Electoral Roll for that region. William Frederick is not listed and she is performing domestic duties.

As you have said, the two are together in Cloncurry in 1913 and William is a miner.
They are still listed together in 1925, so it appears her name was not removed from the roll on her death.  Not surprising I suppose with her using so many different names.

William died

Hi Sue

Thanks for the pointer to the other thread - I had seen it, but the details at that time didn't make a lot of sense.  They do now.

I obtained the Brightwell death certificate and note that the informant was a C.Walduck.  So it looks like he was Flora's last partner - interesting lady!

And having researched the Sole line for many years, the name Clara Clifton Pepper has a very familiar ring - as the wife of the eldest Sole brother, James.  I'll have to delve into that a bit more.

The reason I started looking at the Perry's was that they are so inter-linked with the Soles in the circus world, and I've been trying to make sense of the connections.  Still some way to go, I suspect.

Cheers, Linda

Hi Lynda,

I have not done much on my family history for a while now however Amelia was the grandmother of my own mother who still survives. Somewhere in my records I'm certain that I have the answer as to how the Perrys in Australia are linked to the soles. Are you still looking for it? It was my Grandmother Ruby's cousin who died in the explosion in Queensland.

Hi Jude

Thanks for the offer of help, but I think I have it sorted now - James Sole married Clara Clifton Pepper. Clara's mother was Flora/Bridget Perry (Tancho/Clifton/Brightwell).  William Alfred Sole married Eliza(beth) Perry, Clara's first cousin.  And of course, subsequently, Jean Lindsay (Eliza's granddaughter) married Joe Perry.

I'm guessing, though, that a couple more Perry's might pop up amongst the Soles along the way.

By the way, I'm descended from the Sole brother who was not part of the circus (Edward Goodman), though Ted Sole was initially involved as, like his brothers, he was a bandsman. Musical prowess has continued down the generations (though skipped me!!), but also academic success - Ted's youngest daughter, Ida Amy Margaret Sole, went to university in 1919 and left in the mid 1920s with a Masters degree in classical Greek!!

thanks again
Linda

No problems Lynda. The Perrys are also connected to the Ashtons and the knee bone is connected to the ankle bone  Cheers Jude
