John Roberts
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 13:41 BST (UK) »
Help!! I know John Parsons Roberts was born on 12.11.1851 in Abbey Foregate Shrewsbury and have found the birth record on Genes Reunited but how do I find out which church holds the record as it gives a Volumn number XV111 and page number 171 but where do I go from there?
Kind Regards

Pat

That's a reference to the GRO Indexes.

So when (if) you want the birth certificate, you simply say:
December qtr 1851, Shrewsbury district, Vol 18, Page 171

And they find it!

Website for online ordering is www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Alternatively, try Shropshire Council:
www.shropshire.gov.uk/registrar.nsf/ and click on Copy Certificates (Left Hand Side)

Thankyou I understand now but is it possible to view the parish record where the birth was recorded? Or didn't that happen in 1851? Sorry very new to all this.

To view the parish records you need to know which parish. (i.e. which church).
Not many parish registers can be viewed online - unless you subscribe to something like The Genealogist.

Shropshire Family History Society will sell you copies!

But you could try FamilySearch.org

What you have been looking at are the GRO (General Record Office) Indexes. All registered births from July 1837 should be on there.
Once you have the reference you have to pay to get the Birth Certificate.

The christening has been transcribed on FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org (free to search) although the church is not specified:

John Parsons ROBERTS, son of John ROBERTS and Eleanor, christened 2 Jan 1852, Shrewsbury.

At least 2 other children of John and Eleanor are christened in Shrewsbury around this time, including a Lucy Hayman ROBERTS (at St Giles & Holy Cross), so this marriage looks possible for the parents:

Marriages Dec 1849
(possible spouses)
HAYMAN  Eleanor
ROBERTS  John
Shrewsbury 18 244

If I've found births on familysearch.org with the same indexing project number and source film number does that mean they are definitely related?

How can I then view that source to see if there is any more information?

I can't find a death record for William Roberts b 1.2.1821 and bapised on the same day but he doesn't appear on the next census in 1841.

Is there somewhere else I could look? I've been looking on familysearch.org

Where did you find William's date of birth?

As I understand things, Family Search and Parish Records only show baptisms - not births!

If he died pre-September 1837 you will need to look at Parish Registers.
And for that you need to know which parish.
