Formby of Burscough
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 00:47 BST (UK) »
Good evening,

I am trying to get some additional information as well as confirmation of what I have for one of my family lines.

John Formby
birth-
either 1796 [1851 England Census - Ince Blundell] in Burscough
or 1810 [1861 England Census - Ince Blundell] in Burcough
or 1802 [1871 England Census - Liverpool] in Ormskirk

married to Jane Fairclough - March 1848 [BMD volume XX page 736]
birth
abt 1828 Latham [1851, 1861, 1871 all seem to agree]

children were;
John, Richard, Alice (my GGM), Mary, Ann, Margaret, Jane

Can anyone help me confirm that this is correct and perhaps help me push back another generation?

Thank you!

1841 has a John Formby aged 35-9 in Ince Blundell as a Blacksmith (same occupation as 1851). HO107/518/4 FOL7 P8.

Ellen Tristram (45-9) is a Female Servant in the same house.

Ann Lovelady is next door in both censuses, so it's probably the same chap.

Another possible age for John, I'm afraid.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

If he was in Ince Blundell the family were more than likely Catholics.

His marriage according to www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk was at Holy Family RC Ince Blundell.

Their marriage certificate will give both parties father's names. If they are both from Ince Blundell they were probably baptised at the church there.

I would suggest you need to be looking at baptisms at St John RC Church Burscough. These are not on line as far as I know but are on film at Lancashire Record Office Preston.

For the marriage and children's baptism you need Holy Family registers. These are on film at Crosby Library.

There is a country mansion at Ince Blundell.   If you look on Google Earth it is just alongside the A565 road  between Crosby  and the town of Formby.

Burscough  is about 8 or 9 miles away.

I suggest that you do an internet search for Ince Blundell Hall

I am guessing that the BURSCOUGH registration district  covered a wide area  which probably  ran along the Irish sea coast   between Hightown   and Southport    and then inland  to the  small town of Burscough.

It maybe that your   John Formby   worked for the land owner of the Ince Blundell Hall and Estate.

Can anyone else please confirm the size of the Burscough registration district?

PS..    If you live in Lancashire now, I suggest that you visit Ince Blundell  and  have a look at the old headstones  in the cemetery.   You may find your John Formby.    But you are only about 3 to 4 miles from the town of Formby,  so it may be a common name in that village.

I also suggest   that you amend the thread  title   to include INCE BLUNDELL

I am sorry, but some of my guesses about the "Burscough" reg district may possibly  be wrong in the above reply.

It is more likely that ORMSKIRK was the  registration district.
