Barton Upon Irwell
« on: Monday 02 May 11 17:06 BST (UK) »
Is Barton Upon Irwell a place or part of Manchester, cannot find it in my GB atlas.
I have been looking up Alliott Roe who seemed to live in this place.
Trying to find a conection between Harold Roe pilot born in fulham and Alliott Verdon Roe the aeroplane manufacturer.
Not sure if they are related or not.

Other Half just found Barton upon Irwell in our AA atlas (2008).   It is in Salford, not far from Eccles and the Trafford Centre.   Hope this helps.

Katy.

I think you'll find that all Edwin Alliott Verdon Roes siblings also had the middle name of Verdon

You might find this link useful

Barton is part of Salford which is part of Greater Manchester. There is Barton Airport (which I pass every day on the way to work) which may have some connection with Alliot ??

If you want any photos of the area let me know

Barton on Irwell was a registration district which covered a large area to the south west and west of Manchester. It straddled the River Irwell later to become the Ship Canal.

It covered the districts of Eccles, Swinton, Pendlebury and Irlam, which are now in Salford and the areas of Old Trafford, Stretford, Urmston and Davyhulme which now come under Trafford.

That's putting it simply. ;D

Sir Alliot Verdon Roe was b.26.April 1877 at The Poplars,Patricroft,Eccles Lancashire.

I used to pass the house when I was younger & going to & from work.
The Roe family had lived there for quite some time but moved to London.

If you google A,V.Roe,Patricroft,Eccles you should find quite a lot of detail about him.

I think The Poplars became a school at some point.

Thank you for the info. I am related to Sir Rex Roe and his father Harold Roe. Harold was born in Fulham, his parents were Edward Charles Roe and Agnes Rachel Dadley. Edward's father was also Edward Charles Roe and his father Edward Thomas Roe. I have been told we might be related to Alliott Verdon Roe, so I am just trying to find out any connection.
