1861/1871 census Devonshire - BOWDEN

Hi all,

Hopeing someone can check the 1861 or 1871 census for the following families:

William Bowden Head b. ~1810 occ Farmer/Maltster b. Devon
Cecilia/Sicilia Bowden Wife b. 1810 Chepstow, Monmouth
Frances Bowden Dau b. 1839 Bristol
William Henry Bowden Son b. 1842 Instow, Devon

also:

John Bowden Head b. 1781 West Down, Devon occ farmer
Frances Bowden Wife b. 1788 Instow, Devon

Both were living in Instow Town in the 1851 census

This was all I was able to find out for you.

1861 Census. William Bowden Born. 1813. Widower. Labourer.
living at Instow Village, Devon. Age. 48

1871 Census. William Bowden. Widower. Age 58. Labourer. Still at the same address, but living with him at that time was Thomas Pidler. Grandson. Born 1859. at Instow, Devon.

I had no luck with John & Francis Bowden.
I hope this is of some help.

Hi Sandra,

That's fantastic  I had assumed that William may have been a widower by the census and this gives me more information regarding his daughter's marriage...Pidler hey....another link to follow..

John and Frances would also have been very old by then so that is no surprise

Alfred Pedlar. Grandson. Born. 1858. Instow, Devon.

Caroline Carrol Pedlar. Daughter. Born. 1850. Instow, Devon.

Mary Pedlar. Daughter. Born. 1841. Instow, Devon.

Sarah Elia Pedlar. Wife. Born 1802. Abbotsham, Devon.

Sarah Elia Pedlar. Daughter. Born. 1843. Instow, Devon, Dressmaker.

Susanah Pedlar. Daughter. Born. 1845. Instow, Devon.

No sign of Alexander Jr. on this census.

Jen I could not resist looking on the 1851 Census for your Pidler family. Seems it was a lot larger that year. So all that info is below.

Alexander Pidler. Head. Married. Age, 51. Gardener.

Sarah Pidler. Wife. Age. 48.

Elizabeth A. Pidler. Daughter. Age. 21. Born. Parkham, Devon.

Alexander Pidler. Son. Age. 18. Footman. Born. Parkham, Devon.

Christopher Pidler. Son. Age. 14. Labourer. Born. Alwington, Devon.

Robert Pidler. Son. Age. 12. Born Instow, Devon. Labourer.

Joseph Pidler. (Twin). Son. Age. 10. Born Instow.

Mary Pidler. (Twin). Daughter. Age. 10. Born. Instow,

Sarah Pidler. Daughter. Age. 8. Born. Instow.

Susanna Pidler. Daughter. Age. 5. Born. Instow.

Caroline Pidler. Daughter. Age. 1. Born Instow.

At that time it also shows living with them
Ann Cragg. Servant. Age. 20. Unmarried. Born, Frithelstock, Devon.

The address in 1851 was still Lane End, Instow, Barnstaple, Devon.
So I'm sure this is the same family regardless of the misspelling on the 1861 Census.

Thank you so much for all the information you have given me 

It makes sense to me now I think, it looks like Alexander Pedler/Pidler (b 1833) married Frances Bowden and had two sons Alfred and Thomas - then lost his wife (possibly in child birth?) How sad 

I will now start looking for her death record to make sure. I certainly am glad to have sorted this one out! Low and behold these Bowden's are starting to make some sense!!
