Burials at Crewe/Monks Coppenhall
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 20:51 BST (UK) »
Could anyone advise on sources for burials at Crewe/Monks Coppenhall?

I'm looking for:

Samuel Baggott, died at Monks Coppenhall 16 November 1870, aged 58 years.
Mary Baggott, died at Monks Coppenhall 22 June 1878, aged 65 years.
Eliza Easthope, died at Monks Coppenhall 13 March 1898, aged 39 years.

All help is appreciated.

Church burials in Crewe could be -
 - Christ Church - graveyard now gone;
 - St. Mary (Roman Catholic) - didn't know about that one;
 - United Reformed Church (Congregational), High Town - didn't know that either. Not sure if there can have been much there;
 - Coppenhall, St. Michael (large graveyard still there);

Cemetery:
 - GENUKI mentions "Coppenhall Cemetery, Princess Street. Opened 1876", which I'd never heard of, but the aerial photo on Bing makes it look like it's adjacent to Coppenhall, St. Michael, which probably means I thought it was all one place;
 - Crewe Municipal Cemetery - the major burial place.

(See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/monkscoppenhall.html and
 http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/churchcoppenhall.html )

Church stuff seems to be at Chester RO.

Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council used to be good on answering burial queries - Cheshire East seem a little less forthcoming - I suspect over-work.

Bear in mind it is not impossible for someone to be buried just out of town - e.g. going back to Haslington or Wistaston if the family came from there.

Should have checked with Google Streetview first....

One path goes through what I'd always thought of as St Michael's graveyard. At the south end of the path, it's St. Michael's - their lych-gate. At the north end of the path is a name-board saying "Coppenhall Cemetery". That entrance is on Reid St (not the adjacent Princess St, which is parallel to the path).

Since I'd only ever come in from the south side, I'd never twigged that there was a difference and there's certainly no sign on the ground of any difference between the 2 parts - only the different names at each end of the same path.

Thanks for that information, in paticular the web addresses.

I've previously wandered around the St Michaels churchyard and the adjacent Crewe cemetery but could find no relevant memorials.  I'll now try the Chester RO.

Hello
In the main cemetery in Church Coppenhall, Crewe there is a Cemetery Office telephone no. 01270 212643.  As you have the names and dates of death you will be able to find out/eliminate this cemetery as their burial place.
Alternatively, you could ask them for their email address.
Hope this helps, marthaannie

A few years ago I along with other stalwarts of the then South Cheshire Family History Society spent several weekends in St Michaels churchyard recording the monumental inscriptions so you should be able to get hold of them - try Crewe branch unit in Crewe library.

Thank you for this information.  I recently found out my father had an elder brother whose burial details were listed in Coppenhall St Michael's Register in 1905.  I will certainly ask to see the list of monumental inscriptions on my next visit to Crewe Library.

Regards, marthaannie

Many thanks to all for the assistance provided and apologies for my late acknowledgement.

I did check with the Crewe cemetery office where they found an early record of one burial I was after.  However, it was not at new Crewe Cemetery but at St Michaels, just up the hill.

Then, I spoke with Chester RO who had no records of the particular burials and suggested that I speak with the priest at St Michaels who possibly could have something in the church records.  Father Razzell was most helpful and he searched the churchyard records but without success.  He summized that the burials must have been in the old municipal cemetery adjacent to the churchyard.

Many thanks to all for your helpful efforts.

Best wishes,

Andrew

Hi, AnDRam, I have a microfiche of the monumental inscriptions for St Michaels and none of the names appear on the list.  They may not have had a headstone though.  Good luck in your searches.
