1851 Northumberland census - Pattison, Greenhead parish
« on: Saturday 30 April 11 14:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if the 1851 census for Greenhead Parish, near Haltwhistle, has an entry for a Mr Pattison (not Patterson or Pattinson) First name possibly Edward or William, and possibly at a place called High Onsett.

Thanks

Clare

Hi Clare

Do you have any further details - approx age, any other person in the household?  I've had a quick look and can't find an Edward in Greenhead, although there are a couple living the other side of Haltwhistle in Thorngrafton.  There are lots of Williams, so I haven't waded through them yet.

Hi EeyoreBlue

No, we're sorry but there is nothing else. You see, the name was in a report made in 1870's about a Roman Arm purse found in a quarry in that area in the 1830's and the name of the finder is all we have. We're doing some research on possible Roman stone quarries for an archaeological site in that area and the aforementioned object was found in a crack in the wall by this chap.

The research we're doing is nearing its end now, anyway.

Thank you very much for your time and sorry to disappoint with so little information on which to give you. Blame that Victorian reporter!  :)

Best wishes

Clare

I expect you've already got this - the 1841 census has a family called Pattinson living at High Onset (in the Township of Blenkinsopp) - here it is anyway.

HO  107 / 839 / Book 6 / folio 6 / page 4

High Onset

John Pattinson, 70, farmer, Y
Edward do, 50, ag lab, Y
Ann do, 44, ag lab, Y

Dear Jennifer

Many thanks for your info - sorry not to reply sooner but gardening got in the way  :D

We have found a Thomas Pattison on FreeBMD and we've sent for his death cert to see who he was and what he died from in 1845.
This may have been the person we've been looking for.

It's interesting but on Google Earth it shows High Onsett, a desolate farm, to be well north of Hadrian's Wall and nothing to do with Blenkinsopp! Very confusing.

We'll add your findings to our file, so thank you once again

Regards

I'm afraid Google Earth is sadly mistaken!

The High Onsett in the 1841 and 1841 censuses I gave you was very close to Blenkinsopp and just east of Greenhead, and south of Hadrian's Wall. As I said in my first reply, it was in the Township of Blenkinsopp.

Yes, I've noticed quite a few times it's way off where it should be, that's why its confusing and must be to people who don't know the area.

Look forward to getting the link

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/intermap/viewer.htm
Click on search and then on co ordinates.
A new page will open.
Enter the numbers 367399 and 564570 in the bottom two boxes and click on 'centre map'

A map will open which shows the present-day location of High Onsett. (Don't be confused - it isn't actually there any more!)
Use the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page to navigate to the 1856 - 1865 map, on which you will see High Onsett.
Use the + and - buttons at the bottom of the page to zoom in and out of the map.

Alternatively go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and enter the co-ordinates I gave you in the appropriate boxes on the home page.
This will again to take you to the location on a modern map - use the boxes on the right to naviagate to the older maps. The maps on this site are actually rather clearer.
