Confirmation of a suspicion about Issa POLL
« on: Saturday 30 April 11 12:12 BST (UK) »
Hello, I have, in my tree, an illegitimate woman, Elizabeth Poll. Her christening is registered on the IGI recoirds here: C131292  1813  0952987   Her mother is listed as "Issa Poll" and the christening is in Stradbroke, suffolk.
There are no birth records for an Issa Poll, but there is a Louisa Poll, getting married to a Thomas Aldous 6 years later on Christmas eve (aww) 1819, with her birth listed as 1798, in stradbroke, suffolk.

This is the only Louisa Poll, I have not yet found her christening/birth records however.
Am I right in think that Louisa and Issa are one and the same?
Or can anyone tell me another name Issa could be short for?

Thanks! Jenny

Marissa?  Clarissa?  Isabel?  Isadora?  Not beyond the realms of possibility that it could derive from Elizabeth even.  Difficult one!

Have tried all these, and came up with a possible Lissey and one possible Isabel that's in Somerset rather than Suffolk but still a possibility! I'm just wondering because I have come across a few cousin marriages in my tree ( :o ) and Aldous pops up again a generation down... I'm still thinking it's her at the mo...

Could ISSA just be a mis-transcription of Louisa, if badly written that would make sense.

I know from personal experience (and many others on here will concur) there is sometimes no logic behind the transcribed pages and what is actually written on the original, even when it is blatently clear what the original is!!

If you live close enough to a Family History Center (the familysearch/IGI folks), you might consider ordering in the film that corresponds to the IGI record you found so you can see what the original image of the transcribed record says.

Hi fenifur & others

I've just come across your post re Louisa Poll.  I am descended from Louisa and Thomas Aldous and keep coming up against brick walls when trying to trace Louisa - I'd also be interested in finding out if Louisa or Issa or Elizabeth are related!

Hello Jenny

This might help you

The Suffolk Bpt Index lists Elizabeth POLL Bpt 11 Apr 1813 bb daughter of Issa POLL (servant), Stradbroke, which of course you already know.

It also lists
Miram POLL bpt 31 Jul 1814 bb daughter of Hannah POLL, Stradbroke.

The Suffolk Marriage Index lists:
Louisa POLL to Thomas Aldous of Wilby 24 Dec 1819, Stradbroke
& on the same day
Hannah POLL to John CALVER 24 Dec 1819, Stradbroke.

Could they have been sisters?

This looks like Louisa's burial from the Suffolk Burial Index:
Louisa ALDOUS of Brundish buried 19 Jun 1840 age 37 Brundish, St Lawrence
(I suppose age could be a bit out as she would have only been 10 or 11 when she gave birth to Elizabeth if she was indeed Issa)

Hannah CALVER buried 30 Oct 1875 age 86 Stradbroke.

The SBI also gives these POLL burials around the date of the girls births:
Phoebe POLL buried 22 Aug 1787 daug of John & Elizabeth (pauper), Stradbroke
Mary POLL buried 3 Aug 1793 daug of John & Elizabeth (pauper), Stradbroke
Jonathan POLL buried 10 May 1798 son of John & Elizabeth, Stradbroke
William POLL buried 28 Dec 1808 son of John & Elizabeth, Stradbroke
Elizabeth POLL buried 1 Jun 1831 age 84 Stradbroke
John POLL buried 2 Aug 1833 age 86.

Looks like John & Elizabeth may well be the parents of Louisa & Hannah as well so perhaps SKS will do you a look up in the Stradbroke PRs to confirm.
