Inquest/Post Mortem - Haynes
« on: Friday 29 April 11 21:28 BST (UK) »
I have obtained the death certificate for my maternal grand father, William Edward Haynes, died 16 Feb 1936, Rowley Regis, sub district of Tipton.
The death certificate refers to an inquest & post mortem being held, gives the coronor as Frank Cooper, coroner for Staffordshire South-East.
How /where can I obtain these records.
Appreciate any help
Thank-you

My grandfather committed suicide in 1933 in Tipton Staffs and there was an inquest. I found the transcript of the inquest in the Tipton Herald - there was a full report. The papers are held on tapes at the Smethwick library - you can book a reader to view.

I went down that route as I had seen that option suggested to a request for inquest/post mortem information as the actual court records can be quite graphic.

If you still want to find the actual records I would suggest contacting Smethwick Library (their archive dept) and they would be able to point you in the right direction. They were very helpful when I contacted them.

If you still need someone to look at the Tipton Herald for 1936 in June I will be going to look up some records around the 8th of June and will be happy to see if there is anything mentioned in the Tipton Heral.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Thorneytale.  I'd really appreciate it if you have the time to look at the Tipton Herald for any information, I currently live/work in South Africa so all investigation is via cetificates & the internet at the moment.
In the interim I will try &contact the Smethwick library as you suggest.

The death certificate gives the following info:
Cause of f=death: Asphxiation suicide by drowning in the canal when not of sound mind (then a p.m. underneath which i presume = post mortem.

Place of death: Basin of Birmingham canal off Eagle Lane, Great Bridge, Tipton.
Address at time of death: No 2 Mount St, Tipton (then has m.d. after?)
Inquest held 18 Feb 1936.

Thanks again

My family are around Tipton/Old Swinford/Halesowen and Hartlebury. My trip in June with my brother will be around that area - we will be planning what information we want and the places we will be visiting as well as Smethwick Library - I will let you know in case we are near somewhere that will be useful to you.

I will be going to Smethwick Library on Wednesday the 8th June - they come under Sandwell Council.

If you still want me to look to see if the Inquest is in the Tipton Herald I can do that I have booked a film reader.

I will be trying to find where my relatives are buried if I can so will be looking through the burial records.

I am also going to Dudley Records Office where I have a reader booked to look at their Parish records to try to find details of a marriages and burials hopefully.

If you need me to look up anything let me know by Wednesday morning and I will try and find the information.

Hi Thorneytale, That would be terrific.  Would be interested to see any report on the inquest and death also, if there is a reference to where my grand father is buried.  Will it help if I scan a copy of his death certificate?  I am very grateful.

Thanks
Jayne

While we are looking for my relatives I can also look to see if I can see your grandfather's burial records. If you want to attach a copy of the death certificate that would be good I will then have a reference of where he died and the informant's address.

Thanks,

Karen
