Doherty & Close families, Lackagh, Turloughmore, Galway
« on: Friday 29 April 11 19:28 BST (UK) »
Hi, am searching for information on these families. Charles Doherty would have lived in Lackagh, Turloughmore in Galway in the mid-1800s. Apparently his father had married a woman by the name of Burke and now owned a lot of land in the area through this marriage. In a dispute in the 1840s Charles sold the lands back to another Burke sister (Mary), who had married a Jason Close, (a little confusing I know). I have looked up Griffith and found the records and a very interesting newspaper article! I would like to hear from anyone who might know the name of Charles Doherty's wife and any of their children. I have uncovered quite a few Dohertys in the area but none connected 100% to Charles.
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi Elle,
I am tryin to trace the irish side of my family, my grandfather was Charles Doherty, and his father was John Doherty who married a woman by the name of Catherine Burke, according to my aunty this was his second marriage. They had two children, Charles and Mary, there was mention of another child, Kitty who i think died from TB. Not sure if any of this rings any bells with you, but if it does please get in touch, we may be able to help each other out!

Hi Jodo!
Do you know if they lived in the Galway area? My Charles Doherty would have been born in early 1800s I'd say. I'm not sure who his parents were or who he was married to. I do know that his father had married a Burke.
Thanks for the reply!

Hi Elle,
This may be a tad early for Charles J Doherty, he was married to Eliza Spalding. His Father, John was married to Catheine Burke, although looking at ancestry.com, there seem to be so many Catherine Burke's in Galway!
Where abouts are you doing your research from? are you based in Ireland?

That's a pity. Yes I'm based in Dublin but trying to piece together the Galway branch of my family tree. Try rootsireland.ie for births, marriages etc for most Irish counties. Good luck with your research!
