Hi,

It looks like "Son" Joseph aged 1 on the 1871 census was actually Josefina  Rosina
Baptism on the new family search:

Josefina Rosina Stephens baptised 19th June, 1870 at Whitegate, Cheshire - Parents Joseph Stephens and Anne Pimlet.

Baptism of Clara Adelina Stephens at Christ Church, Bradford, Lancashire on 14th February 1875 - Parents Joseph and Annie Stephens

Ahh - wondered where Rosina was. Guess the 1881 census would clarify it. I will try to confirm Clara's birth date as I seem to have 2 possibilities  1875/1876  
do you think they married after Rosina's birth?

Hi,

Joseph and Ann married in 1868 (see reply #5 above).  Rosina by the looks of it was registered as Josephine Steffens in the subdistrict of Winsford, Cheshire West in 1870 - see www.Cheshirebmd.org.uk . 

If Clara was baptised in February, 1875 as Clara Adelina then I think the birth certificate you need would be the one that Carole found:

Clara Adelina Stevens September Quarter 1874 Manchester Volume 8d page 353.

There is a death of Hermann Steffens in Liverpool aged 55 in dec qtr 1901 ....this would make him born 1845  ...
Mo has Joseph TWICE on his marriage and also on the 1871 census ....born 1832/33 on both....so, maybe Hermann was a relation of Joseph ?....I don`t think Joseph was Hermann and changed his name ....
on www.geneanet.org there are 2,142 family trees for Steffens...the vast majority are from the Netherlands, though there are a few from Germany...looks to have originated in The Netherlands  though

thank you Alan for your info. I know Joseph/ Herman died between 1884 - 1891. his daughter Clara Adeline was between 9 and 16yrs. Her grand daughter seems convinced his name was Herman, yet it does say Joseph on Clara's marriage cert and I am sure it is the correct one.

Perhaps I should try to find a marriage for her sister known as Rosina but it seems registered as Josephine as Mo has discovered.?? what would her fathers name be on her berth certificate and Clara's ??  there was also a sister Ann who died young..

I have not found them on the 1881 census yet...
