Can you be more specific about what it is you want us to trace?

Do you have a copy of the marriage cert showing who her father was?  When did they marry?

Where was Anna born and when and where was Herman born

Have you checked the 1881 census for her?

When and where was Rosina born

hi Carole

I thought I did have a birth cert for Clara Stevens - but after talking to an elderly relative yesterday it seems to be wrong.  All I know from the relative is that Clara went into service at the age of 16yrs. I have her marriage cert she married Charles Spear in 1897, aged 22yrs. so have worked out possible birth date from that. Her mother was called Anna Pimblet and father Herman Stevens who she thought was german. They lived in Salford.

Anna died, Herman took the girls to Liverpool to live with their Aunt and uncle Godfried and Clara.. it gets complicated from there..

So to find out anythig about Anna and Herman would be great.

I have tried marriages and births but no luck - are you showing a birth for her as Clara Adelina 1874?

On the marriage certificate of Clara Stevens to Charles Spear in 1897 her father is listed as JOSEPH Stevens not Herman.

The marriage of Joseph Steffens and Ann Pimblett was in 1868 at St. Peters, Everton

29th August, 1868
Joseph Steffens, 36,Widower, Labourer, 49 Roscommon Street, Father Henry Steffens Farmer
Ann Pimblett, 23, Spinster, 108 Opie Street, Father Peter Pimblett, Labourer.

Mo - thank you - I know it says father is Joseph but when I tried to trace a birth then for Clara I could only find one for a Clara Stevens, father unknown, of Manchester. It was talking to a newly found descendant, a grand daughter of Clara, that I gained new information. The problem with the names sounding germanic, and changes made during 1st world war time, but I feel sure that you have found the right one...
thank you so much

I wonder where the name Streffens originates..

Is it possible for you to check the 1871 census for me or should I post it seperately?

gratefully Denise

Oh dear I have just typed everything up and then pressed the wrong key and it all disappeared ::)

This is who I think it is in the 1871 census as the ages do tie up with the marriage and I can`t see any further suspects to fit the bill:

Lower Meadow Bank, Over, Cheshire

Joseph Stephens, Head, Mar, 38, Salt Maker, Germany
Ann, Wife, Mar, 25, Wigan Lancashire
Joseph, Son, 1, Over, Cheshire

I do suspect that Ann was born Glossop Derbyshire on the 1851 census aged 7 - Father Peter, mother Jane and they were living in Wigan.

Kind regards,
Mo

ooo - thanks Mo, this is interesting, it was said that Clara was half German half French? I wonder of Joseph might have been Herman and change to an anglified name as he did surname later? the area is somewhat diferent to that of Salford given by relative tho..

thank you so much for adding another piece of a very difficult puzzle
